From inspirational speakers to book signings, here’s why Ada Lovelace Day Live is the hottest STEM ticket in town

If you’re a fan of all things STEM, then we have the perfect event to excite and inspire this autumn.

Celebrating women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), Ada Lovelace Day Live brings together some of the industry’s greatest thinkers and trailblazers who will share their experiences, insights and expertise, empowering the next generation of women in all these fields.

“Ada Lovelace Day is about telling the stories of women in science, technology, engineering and maths,” says founder Suw Charman-Anderson, who created Ada Lovelace Day in 2009 in response to the lack of women on stage at tech conferences.

“These stories are so important. They provide inspiration to girls and women who are considering studying STEM and show that they can also follow their curiosity and build a career. They show women who are already in STEM that they aren’t alone and that success is possible, and they give other people the stories to understand, inspire and support the women in their lives.”

Hosted by comedian Helen Arney, this year’s event takes place on 10 October at London’s Royal Institution from 6.30pm, and features everything from talks to book signings, with guests able to attend in person or online via livestream.

“You’ll also be able to browse our book stall,” says Charman-Anderson. “Plus, Dr Aarathi Prasad will be signing copies of her new book, Silk: A History In Three Metamorphoses, which looks not just at the cultural and biological history of silk, but also the amazing technologies it has inspired, from sutures to pharmaceuticals, replacement body parts to holograms.”

“I hate to single out any particular talks, as I know they’ll all be fascinating,” says Charman-Anderson when quizzed about the speakers she’s most looking forward to seeing.

“But as an ex-geologist who grew up in Dorset, I am particularly excited by Dr Anjana Khatwa’s The Jurassic Coast: Take A Leap Into Deep Time. Anjana will take us on a tour of that amazing 95-mile long section of the Dorset and Devon coast that spans some 185 million years of geological time.

“I’m also looking forward to Rosie Curran Crawley’s – hopefully explosive! – demo, which will draw inspiration from Jane Marcet’s 1805 textbook, Conversations On Chemistry, replicating some of her original experiments.”

In addition to all the talks, there will be a cash bar on the night where guests can order a glass of something nice while taking in the grandeur of the Royal Institution.
