Bobs and layers are massive trends in their own right, so combining the two in a feathered bob just makes sense. Here’s our guide to this chic hairstyle.
Bob haircuts are reigning supreme: from the bottleneck bob to Selena Gomez’s trending ‘curve bob’, there really is a cut and a style for everyone. But if you’re looking for something a bit more textured, opting for a feathered bob might be the way to go.
To bring you up to speed, a feathered bob is essentially a cut with so many layers that it creates a tumbling, light, plumage-esque effect at the ends. Since the ends aren’t weighed down, it’s ideal for adding volume.
The idea of a shorter, feathered look might not instil much initial confidence, but bear with us on this one. While feathered hair has had a bit of a branding problem since Farrah Fawcett’s heyday (her iconic cut is so recognisable that her headshot is the identifying picture on the style’s Wikipedia page), it’s having something of a renaissance.
So, given that we’re all going rogue and chopping our hair into short, chic bobs, we’re seriously questioning why we haven’t thought about combining the two cuts sooner.
Luckily, it’s never too late. As L’Oréal Professionnel UK editorial artist Louis Byrne tells Stylist, the feathered bob makes a nice change from the longer, waved styles that have long been prominent in the fashion space.
“There is a desire from clients to change up their style for something new and fresh,” he says. “However, constant heat styling can take its toll on hair, and that’s why the feathered layers and bobs are so popular right now. These styles will allow for healthier-looking hair while creating balance, shape and form for more bounce and volume.”
How can feathered layers work with a bob?
“It’s the feathered layers that bring out individual personality in a bob,” Byrne says. “A good hair cutter will know where to take the layers and how much to feather according to your individual features. Always invest in a good haircut, as this should last you between three and five months. It’s also important to take good care of your hair between salon appointments. I recommend always finishing with an oil for added shine and to keep ends hydrated.”
How will a feathered bob look on different hair textures?
“The feathered bob works on all hair textures as long as it is cut well,” says Byrne. “I always recommend booking a consultation with your stylist beforehand to explain exactly what you want to achieve. Your stylist will then be able to advise you depending on your hair type and texture. I use feathering in all my haircutting to personalise the cut with an undone but precise finish to ensure the hairstyle fits each of my clients.”
What to ask your stylist for
“First, you need to find the right stylist for you. Research their work beforehand to ensure they are the right fit for the style you want,” he explains. “Then make sure you tell them that you would like a feathering technique – it’s important to know that using thinning scissors will not get you the same results; instead, they will make your hair look drier and wirier. I also recommend asking for colour to enhance the texture of this style.”
