Paris is always a good idea: 4 French hosting tips for every summer occasion
8 months ago
Planning your next summer social? Look no further than these hacks from French hosting experts…
In the words of Audrey Hepburn, Paris is always a good idea – particularly this summer, where athletes and spectators from all over the world descended on the city for 2024’s Olympic Games. And if there’s one thing the French know how to do particularly well, it’s throwing a party – be it an all-out opening ceremony, chic dinner or simply drinks and dancing in the sunset.
Maybe, like us, you’re already taking cues from the French on your wardrobe (Breton is a necessity, and dark-wash, relaxed denim will see you through just about any situation) or maybe the chic folk have influenced your beauty routine (we see you, undone hair and rouge lippy).
But there are plenty of ways to add a little French flair to your next summer get-together, too – particularly if you’re going al fresco.
We turned to some women in the know for their tips and tricks for bringing a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ to the party – from the drinks to serve to the tablescapes you can create…
1. Consider the details
“Hosting an al fresco gathering with the elegance and effortless style of the French is easier than you think,” says Lyon native, Clemence De Crecy, founder of luxury PR agency Clementine Communications.
“Start by creating an elegant tablescape that blends rustic charm with refined touches. A linen tablecloth in a soft, neutral shade sets the foundation, while a mix of vintage tableware and modern glassware adds a sophisticated flair.
“Scatter fresh flowers, like peonies or lavender, in small vases along the table to infuse natural beauty into the setting.”
2. Sharing is caring
“I grew up in Dijon, where we always opt for relaxed, family-style dinners with big dishes made from high quality ingredients placed in the centre of the table for people to share,” says French fashion and beauty editor Karine Laudort.
“We describe this as dining ‘à la bonne franquette’ – simple and unfussy.
“The French also always offer an aperitif before dinner – find your signature cocktail and serve that.”
If you’re hunting for the perfect French-inspired summer sip to serve at your dinner, why not try the Chambord Blackberry French Martini? Simple but elevated, the chic cocktail is certain to be a hit with your guests.
3. Serve seasonal wherever possible
“Just like the French, when it comes to food I’m a huge fan of simplicity,” says chef Judy Joo, founder of Seoul Bird.
“To impress guests, stock up on ingredients of the highest quality and really let them shine.
“Buy seasonal and local – that’s the secret. Great salad leaves only need a light, easy French vinaigrette to taste amazing – fresh fish only needs a kiss of lemon, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a little salt.
“Less is more.”
4. Atmosphere is everything
“Think about your get-together as not just an al fresco dinner, but as a way to create a memory for your guests. It’s all about the complete experience,” says Laure Ferrand, assistant head bartender at Le 300 at Maybourne Riviera in the south of France.
“A beautifully crafted playlist sets the tone for the party you’re hosting – so dedicate some time to curating it.”
Use your playlist as a way to welcome guests: artists like SZA, Frank Ocean and Daniel Caesar – or the French singer-songwriter Lous And The Yakuza – will create a laidback atmosphere.
As the evening progresses, switch things up with a little more energy – try French superstar Christine And The Queens when you want to start upping the tempo.
Make the moment magnifique with Chambord this summer.
