We asked chef Rachel Ama for her top tips on how to make lunchtime a little bit more delicious…

When was the last time you took a lunch break? Not a limp salad while you scanned your emails, but actually left the office for a full 60 minutes with a meal you didn’t grab mindlessly from a shelf. Chances are, it’s been too long.

In fact, research from Lipton Ice Tea found that only 18% of Brits regularly eat lunch away from their desk, while 60% skip their lunch break entirely at least twice a week. Considering taking a proper break has been proven to boost your overall well being, it’s worth shaking up your habits.

What are the benefits of taking a lunch break?

A 60-minute sabbatical won’t just cure your stomach grumbles. In fact, a proper lunch break has a whole host of benefits.

Firstly, taking time to eat lunch has been proven to positively shift your outlook for the rest of the day, releasing mood-boosting chemicals like serotonin. Stepping away from your computer can also stimulate your creativity and problem-solving skills.

Not only that, it’s been proven that people feel more productive after taking a dedicated lunch break. It’s all down to the fact that your brain has time to rest and recharge – rest hard, work hard.

And if all of that weren’t enough, a lunch hour gives you the chance to relax during a demanding day of deadlines, as well as to connect with colleagues outside of the office.

Hungry? Rachel Ama, plant-based chef and the author of One Pot: Three Ways and Rachel Ama’s Vegan Eats, has teamed up with Lipton Ice Tea to help make your lunchtimes work for you. Here are her top tips:

lunch break

1. Get prepped

“We all know that a day can become busier than expected very easily, and all of a sudden you’ve skipped lunch, so it’s worthwhile spending a little time in advance to prepare your meals for the week. That way, you’ll always have something tasty ready, saving you time and effort when you’ve already got lots to think about.”

2. Make a favourite meal

“Whip up something you love and look forward to eating. Knowing a delicious meal is waiting for me makes me more inclined to take the time to enjoy it and not skip it. This doesn’t need to be anything too elaborate, whether that’s a salad with your favourite dressing or knowing you’ve got your go-to drink chilling in the fridge.”

Need inspo? We’re currently obsessed with this lemony fennel, apple and quinoa salad with maple glazed walnuts.

3. Do something fun

“If the act of having lunch in itself is not enough to force you away, why not dedicate your lunch break to something you love, like reading a book or listening to music. It’s your time to recharge and indulge in a little personal happiness.”

While Rachel loves to relax with a podcast, why not check out a Lipton Lunch Club? Not only does this pop-up, currently on tour around the UK, encourage you to get out in the sunshine and sip a complimentary Lipton Iced Tea, you’ll also be able to enjoy outdoor games and live music.

The Lipton Lunch Club bus, heading to Birmingham, Bristol and Portsmouth next, is a fun outside oasis where you can catch up with colleagues or have some downtime. You can catch a DJ playing a set or even take a micro-nap on one of the deckchairs…”

Now that’s worth delaying a few emails for.

4. Meet a friend

“A recent survey by Lipton Ice Tea showed that people are more likely to take a break away from their working area when they have someone to go with, and I’m no different. Aside from the fact that chatting to a friend forces you to take your mind off work, having another person as part of my lunch means I’m held accountable for taking a break. Whether it’s eating packed lunches in the park or grabbing a bite at the local coffee shop, it’s also a great way to catch up and relax.”

5. Get outside

“Most of us, whether you’re in a kitchen, an office, a school or hospital, spend the majority of our day inside. With this, I try to view the opportunity to go outside during the working day as being a bit of a treat, and who wants to miss out on a treat? Personally, stepping outside to breathe in the fresh air, even if it’s just for a few minutes, makes all the difference to my mood and energy levels, particularly on difficult days.”
