With a slew of bank holidays on the horizon, we suggest it’s time you take a Gallic break, taking inspiration from our new favourite foodie Rachel Khoo. After Channel-hopping from her Croydon home, Khoo, 31, shot to fame after her mini restaurant, La Petite Cuisine à Paris (based in her flat), became a global talking point, securing her own TV show (Mondays, 8.30pm, BBC 2) and a book deal off its immense popularity. Here, she picks her top places for Parisian outdoor eating…

THE MARKET: MARCHÉ D’ALIGRE

Place Aligre, 12th Arr (marchedaligre.free.fr)

From fruit to meat and fish, it has both cheap and gourmet sections with some of the best cheese in the city.

THE BAKERY: PAIN ET DES IDÉES

34 rue Yves Toudic, 10th Arr (dupainetdesidees.com)

For the best rustic sourdough country loaf with a smokey crust and rolls filled with anything from figs to goat’s cheese or lardons.

THE WINE SHOP: LE VERRE VOLÉ

67 rue de Lancry, 10th Arr (leverrevole.fr)

Full of wine from independent producers it’s both shop and restaurant. In good weather everyone grabs a bottle and sits by the canal.

THE PUB GARDEN: ROSA BONHEUR

Parc des Buttes Chaumont, 2 allée de la Cascade (rosabonheur.fr)

An amazing wine bar in the middle of my favourite Paris park. Open from Wednesday to Sunday.

THE GREEN GROCER: JOEL THIEBAULT

Rue Debrousse and Place d'Iéna, 16th Arr (joelthiebault.fr)

Joel provides Paris’ top restaurants with vegetables but you can get his food in President Wilson Market.

Ma Cave en Ville

My other favourite wine shop would be Ma Cave en Ville, a fantastic independent wine shop. When I’m having friends over I go in, say what I’m cooking and my budget and they always have great recommendations to pair with the meals. You’ll find everything from really good 5€ wines, to more expensive bottles for special occasions.

La Grande Epicerie

38 rue de Sèvres, 7th (lagrandeepicerie.fr)

La Grande Epicerie is the Parisian version of Harvey Nicholas or Selfridges, it has a good array of clothing, but also a really nice – if a little pricy – food hall. You can get anything and everything there, so if you don’t have time to go to all the little shops, you can go there and get everything you need for your canal picnic...you can probably even buy your picnic blanket there if your budget stretches!

Gontran Cherrier

22 rue Caulaincourt, 18th (gontran-cherrier.com)

It’s run by a 3rd generation baker, who has taken grandfather’s recipes and modernised them. You can always find fabulous experimental breads here, I recently picked up a black bread, with sesame seeds, dyed with squid ink.

Pâtisserie des Rêves

I can’t talk about French foods without mentioning a cake shop! One of my favourites is Pâtisserie des Rêves– patisseries of dreams. Everything is so beautifully presented that it nearly looks like a jewel shop, and the chef Philippe Conticini makes these amazing, very classic French patisseries. All the cakes are delicious, but my favourites is le Paris-Brest, a ring of shoe pastry, sprinkled with icing sugar and almonds, and filled with a praline pastry cream - it’s so good!

G. Detou

58 rue Tiquetonne, 2nd

Another amazing shop is G. Detou which is an appropriate play on words meaning ‘I have everything - it’s a treasure cave of ingredients with everything you can imagine from foie gras to 10k bags of chocolate buttons. They also have lots of French delicacies, like special mustards – I recently found a violet flavoured mustard there. It’s also great for things like nib sugar, which doesn’t melt and is perfect to put on your brioche.
