Private islands are not, on the whole, considered the domain of normal folk. A private island is something you buy when you have so much money you literally don’t know what else to do with it. Johnny Depp bought one in the Bahamas on the advice of Marlon Brando, because of course. Leonardo DiCaprio has one off the coast of Belize that he’s now turning it into an eco-resort, because of course. And Celine Dion last year sold her ‘island palace’ in Quebec for a casual £18million ($25.5m), because of course.

But thanks to the rise of holiday rental sites, people with 9-5 jobs and non-film star salaries can now get in on the action. Holiday search engine HomeToGo has released a list of some of the best private islands bookable through its website, and many of them are relatively affordable.

Here are seven of the best, in order of most expensive to cheapest.

7. East Sister Rock Island, Florida – from £719 ($929) a night

OK, £719 a night is a lot of money. But split between six (the maximum the property holds), a stay on this teeny-tiny eco-friendly island in the Florida Keys works out to just under £120 per person per night – less than the cost of a room in many central London hotels. The island boasts a boat dock, helicopter launch pad and your own 25 foot skiff boat to get you to and from the mainland, and is entirely powered by wind and solar panels.

6. Ipil Waterfront, Philippines – from £541 ($700) a night

This private resort island in nestled amongst a cluster of island in El Nido, Palawan, described as “one of the Philippines’ crown jewels”. Stay in a seven-person house tucked away in the lush tropical forest, with views of towering limestone cliffs and the sparkling South China Sea.

5. Bird Island, Belize – from £383 ($495) a night

Bask in a tropical paradise on this tiny private atoll in the Caribbean Sea. Go swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and exploring, or simply swing your days away in a hammock on the beach. Guests (up to six at a time) are responsible for bringing their own food, but boat transport between the island and the mainland is included in the price.

4. Prospect Point House Private Island Paradise, Bahamas – from £348 ($450) a night

You and up to seven pals will apparently have billionaires and celebrities as neighbours during your stay on this island in the Bahamas – as well as turtles, stingrays and the world-famous swimming pigs (!).

This four-person private island in the Bahamas boasts pink sandy beaches and nature trails, and the owners will also lay on private boat tours and dinner.

Up to eight people can stay in this beautiful wooden cabin on a private island in upstate New York, making it perfect for a group getaway (and relatively cheap if everyone pays their way).

1. Colleton River Plantation, US – from £237 ($307) a night

This 150 acre private island plantation sits off the coast of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Guests stay in a devastatingly pretty clapboard cottage, overlooking misty marshes and ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Split between four people (the maximum amount the cottage sleeps), a stay here works out to less than £60 per person per night.
