From Rio to Moscow: an interactive glimpse at what Christmas looks like around the world

Here in Blighty, we take all things Christmas quite seriously. From meticulously decorating our over-sized pine trees to singing carols all December long and eating an abundance of hot mince pies with a side of mulled wine.

And come Christmas day, we expect the presents to be safely tucked under the tree, the outdoor world to look suitably frosty and our dinner plates to be brimming with stuffing, crispy roast potatoes and turkey.

But have you ever wondered what the big day looks like in Cape Town?

A new interactive gallery created by Photobox provides a wonderful little snapshot of how festivities look across the world, showing the ways different countries and cultures celebrate.

The clever design (below) lets you click on destinations of a revolving globe to discover fascinating facts about traditions in a particular city, and browse a selection of images pulled together documenting Christmas there the previous year, so you can garner a flavour of what December 25 feels like, whether you're in Toronto, LA, Rio or Moscow.

The graphic also comes with information on particular traditions and beliefs in different places.

For example, in Sydney the children believe that Father Christmas lets his reindeer have a rest once he gets to Australia, and kangeroos pick up the work instead. He also exchanges his North Pole gear down under for something a little cooler, understandably.

In Rio, Brazilians pin small pieces of white cotton to their Christmas trees to symbolise snow - despite the city's balmy average temperature of 25°C.

And did you know that in Russia, Christmas is generally celebrated on January 7?
