In October, the Black British Book Festival arrives at the Barbican Centre with the 2024 lineup including talks from Grammy award-winning Eve, MP Diane Abbott, journalist and presenter Charlene White and lots more.

The Black British Book Festival, Europe’s biggest celebration of Black literature, is back for its fourth year on 5 October. Following the success of previous years, the festival continues to create new and exciting opportunities for Black British writers, especially in such a white-dominated industry.

Founded in 2021 by Selina Brown, the Black British Book Festival has become a key event on the literary calendar. Each year, thousands of people come together to celebrate the richness of Black British authors across a range of genres. This year, for the first time, the festival will be held in partnership with the Barbican Centre in London.

“We are proud and excited to be hosting the Black British Book Festival here at the Barbican for the first time this year,” says Karena Johnson, head of creative collaboration at the Barbican Centre. “The extensive line-up of Black talent being celebrated at this full-day event is incredible. The power of books (and reading) to celebrate Black excellence, to amplify shared connections could not come at a more important time. It’s going to be an inspiring and joyous day.”

The 2024 lineup includes Grammy award-winning Eve, who’s sharing her journey with her autobiography Who’s That Girl?; Diane Abbott talking about her experiences from her memoir A Woman Like Me; and journalist and presenter Charlene White sharing her personal experiences and career milestones.

Other guests include activists Mikaela Loach, Tayshan Hayden Smith and Kwajo Tweneboa as well as Paul Brunson, who will host a fireside chat on finding love. Attendees can also enjoy a range of exciting activities including panel discussions, keynote speeches and workshops.

“Our mission has always been to create a space where Black British literature and talent can thrive. The Black British Book Festival is more than just an event – it’s a movement that inspires and challenges the traditional literary landscape. This year, our partnership with the Barbican Centre takes us another step closer to realising that vision,” said Selina Brown.
