Fancy a last minute festive jaunt? Let us enlighten you with the winter travel hacks you need to know.

We might have had one of the dreamiest summers on recent record, with a heatwave that had most of us believing we’d inadvertently migrated to Spain, but we like to think there’s plenty of things to look forward to in winter, too.

From mulled wine to festive pop-ups, the colder months of the year are perfect for wandering around Christmassy stalls and enjoying warming (preferably alcoholic) beverages - but where else is better to do that than on a wintery city break

If you love the idea of scooting off somewhere on your Christmas annual leave, we’ve got some information we think you’ll find very interesting indeed.

Travel experts at flight price checking website, Skyscanner, have examined their extensive data and found that the best time to book cheap plane tickets for a Christmas break is 13 weeks before the big day itself.

They report an average saving of 29% on flights booked in the last week of September and also revealed the day you definitely shouldn’t fly - the last Saturday before Christmas, which is always the busiest.

If snowy mountain tops or German markets weren’t what you had mind for your Christmas getaway, you might be in luck. Skyscanner’s findings also show some of the cheapest destinations to travel to throughout December, the most economical of which is Abu Dhabi.

Since last year, flights to the capital of the United Arab Emirates have dropped by 27%, from £730.25 to £529.99, and that’s not the only place on the list.

Other cities to visit this winter for a bargain price are St Petersburg, which has dropped in price by 21% since last year and Penang in Malaysia, for which flights are cheaper by 19%. Reykjavik in Iceland is also looking more affordable this year, with a drop of 19%, as is Vienna coming slightly behind with a price drop of 13%.

If you are thinking of trying to bag yourself a last minute holiday, be sure to check out our advice on the travel hacks that could score you a free first class seat and tips on the best place to sit once you get on the plane.
