“We get on so well. When you know someone and you’ve been together for so many years, you understand each other’s sense of humour and each other’s way of being,” Kinsman tells me when I ask if it ever gets awkward. “That’s always the challenge to navigate when you go on holiday with someone for the first time. Whereas we know each other’s rhythm. You’re at ease with each other in a different way.”

She says it is in many ways easier to holiday together after separating because the removal of the romantic relationship takes away a lot of the pressure and “things about the other person don’t irritate you as much.” But it does ultimately come down to the idea of not giving up those inherent family traditions. “You still want to keep that family album going,” she adds. “It’s that vision of continuity of all the adventures you have together as a family.”

Michelle Bassam, psychological therapist at Harley Therapy, also emphasises the family element when it comes to holidaying together post-separation – but adds that it tends to work best for families on active holidays. “I have worked with a couple in the past where if they go on a skiing holiday it’s just a fact that daddy comes too even though you’re living separately,” she tells me. “So when it’s that type of holiday it works better. But mainly with children involved. For many couples, if it’s just a relaxing holiday then they tend to probably not to.” While she mentions that it can have the capacity to send mixed messages, the best way to keep things smooth for both the couple and any kids is to set firm boundaries before the trip.

Her advice is to first make it clear – particularly when there are new partners to consider – that the holiday is happening as a family unit. “Then, before leaving, the couple need to discuss what their boundaries are. Do you want to spend evenings on your own? Will you share babysitting duties? It’s important you have it all planned before going so that it’s as smooth as possible,” she adds. Ultimately, though, Bassam says it’s simply down to what each couple and family unit can healthily manage. “I think so many of my couples try to be really good parents apart. Now what does that mean? If it means once a year you can go off and have a fabulous holiday knowing that everybody is going to enjoy it then go ahead.”
