Zooey Deschanel reveals baby boy’s unique animal-themed name

Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik have welcomed their second child together. The New Girl star’s publicist confirmed to HelloGiggles that she gave birth last week in Los Angeles.

“Zooey, Jacob and their daughter Elsie are overjoyed to welcome the newest member of their family,” said the rep.

This is Deschanel and Pechenik’s second child together – their eldest, of course, being their daughter, Elsie Otter, who was born in 2015.

And, just like they did with their little girl, Deschanel and her husband have chosen another animal-themed name for their newborn son: Charlie Wolf.

The name Charlie means ‘free man’, while Wolf refers, of course, to the animal of  the same name. While often thought to be solitary creatures (ever heard the phrase ‘lone wolf’ before?), wolves tend to run in packs – and place a strong emphasis on family ties.

While Deschanel has yet to comment on her son’s name, the 37-year-old did reveal that she had a penchant for wildlife-themed monikers during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres last year.

“[It's a family name] in the sense that we're all mammals,” she explained. “Elsie is kind of a classic name ... and then we were like the middle name can be a little bit wild.”

Deschanel added that she particularly loved the fact that so very few other children would share her daughter’s middle name.

When she revealed Elsie Otter's full name back in October 2015, Deschanel listed off the water creatures' admirable characteristics.

“They're sweet, and they're also smart," she said on the Today show. “They use tools, and they keep their favourite tools. They hold hands while they sleep.

“There's so many things about otters — they're wonderful.”

Deschanel tied the knot with Pechenik in a secret ceremony in June 2015.
