Zoella gets real about what it’s like to live with imposter syndrome

Imposter syndrome doesn’t discriminate.

Zoe Sugg has millions of followers, and a successful career as a YouTuber and an author. Zoella, as she is more commonly known, also has her own beauty line – which ties in with the hugely successful beauty and lifestyle blog she started in 2009.

However, like many other women, Sugg suffers from imposter syndrome. And, in a new Instagram post, she has opened up about the feelings of doubt she suffers whenever she looks back on all she has achieved.

Imposter syndrome is defined as a “phoniness in people who believe that they are not intelligent, capable or creative, despite evidence of high achievement”, and around 70% of us are expected to suffer from it at some point in our lives.

In an Instagram post, Sugg shared that she had “major imposter syndrome at the moment”.

“I’m constantly doubting everything I’ve achieved, everything I’m working on business wise & everything I’m working on in my personal life!” she continued.

She admitted that the imposter syndrome was even making her second-guess things she had said and wondering whether she had done something properly.

“It’s such a peculiar feeling & nothing I do seems to make it ‘less so’,” she wrote.

In the past, women including former First Lady Michelle Obama and former Women’s Equality Party leader Sophie Walker have admitted to experiencing feelings of doubt and like they don’t belong.

Obama has previously said: “I had to overcome the question ‘am I good enough?’ It’s dogged me for most of my life. Many women and young girls walk around with that question in their minds.”

It can feel like there’s no way out when you’re in a place of doubt, but steps including writing down a list of things you’ve achieved and surrounding yourself with supportive people can help.

And remembering you’re not alone is also crucial, something we’re sure Sugg was reminded of in the responses to her post, where fans shared their own experiences and offered words of comfort. And many took the opportunity to tell her how proud they were of her achievements, with one saying: “It’s only natural but do know that you’ve achieved so much already and done some amazing things already and you’re only 28 so much more is to come ❣️❣️ proud of you always.”
