Winona Ryder says she’s been married to Keanu Reeves for 26 years

Winona Ryder thinks she actually got married to Keanu Reeves on the set of Dracula in 1992.

By Hollywood standards, Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves have had one long, beautiful marriage. No cheating scandals. No unconscious coupling. And no real recollection of it 26 years later.

That’s right, the pair have now revealed that there’s a possibility they’re legally married. In Romania, that is.

While promoting their new rom-com Destination Wedding, Ryder revealed that a “real Romanian priest” was used for the nuptials filmed in Dracula back in 1992.

“We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life,” the Stranger Things actress told Entertainment Weekly.

The duo played Jonathan Harker and Mina Murray in the adaptation of Bram Stoker’s gothic novel, alongside Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins.

“In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest,” Ryder added. “We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”

Reeves joked, “It’s lovely to see you again.” But Ryder reminded him that they went through the entire ceremony and said their “I dos.”

When Reeves asked, “We said yes?” Ryder responded, “Don’t you remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.”

With slow-dawning realisation (and incredible comedic timing), Reeves gaped: “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”

Now, director Francis Ford Coppola has backed Ryder’s theory.

After filming finished, Coppola said he wasn’t content with a set-up version of the scene and decided that “having the real wedding ceremony as it might be in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful”.

So, he filmed a ceremony in an actual Greek Orthodox church in Los Angeles with an actual priest. “This is pretty authentic and I think very beautiful, because we actually did the ceremony and had the priest do the ceremony,” Coppola said. “So in a sense, when we were all done, we realised that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony.”

Playing a pair of disgruntled wedding guests, Destination Wedding is the third time that Ryder and Reeves have starred in a film together. After Dracula, the pair starred in Philip K Dick’s adaptation A Scanner Darkly in 2006 and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee in 2009.

The upcoming film is directed by Victor Levin, whose last film was indie rom-com 5 to 7 back in 2014.

Ryder, who dated Johnny Depp and Matt Damon over a decade ago, has spoken candidly about marriage and divorce in the past.

“I’d rather never have been married than been divorced a few times,” Ryder told Porter magazine in 2016. “Not that there’s anything wrong with divorce, but I don’t think I could do it if that was a possibility.”

If you ask us, they’ve got the perfect marriage.

Destination Wedding will hit UK cinemas on 31 August.
