Like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, or Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride, there are some on-screen Nineties perfect sponsored_longforms that just deserve to be given a new lease of life.
Which is why the news of Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves playing lovers in a new film is giving us all the feels.
The iconic duo, who are known more for their gothic musings and sci-fi adventures than their rom-coms, will play grumpy, unpleasant wedding guests in new film Destination Wedding.
The upcoming film is directed by Victor Levin, whose last film was indie rom-com 5 to 7 back in 2014.
“When comedy is seated in character and truth it’s both funny and moving, and on that basis Vic’s screenplay is one of the best I’ve read in a long time,” producer Robert Jones told Variety. “Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves are wonderfully skilful actors and their chemistry on-screen truly brings these irascible characters to life.”
This will be the third time that Ryder and Reeves have starred in a film together. The duo first graced the big screen together back in 1992 in Bram Stoker’s Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola, followed by Philip K Dick’s adaptation A Scanner Darkly in 2006 and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee in 2009.
The Matrix actor and Stranger Things actress have known one another since their teenage years. In an interview with PORTER magazine last year, Ryder spoke about their long friendship – and revealed that they share similar acting methods.
While filming Stranger Things, Ryder said, the cast are given menthol [whatever happens here] under their eyes to help them cry faster. She said that she and Reeves both prefer to bring themselves to tears naturally while acting.
“I actually have to really cry,” she said. “I was talking to Keanu, who I’ve known since I was 15, and we both felt so old-school: ‘Um, sorry, I need a second!’”
The cast of Destination Wedding have recently wrapped filming in California, and there’s no release date currently in place – or any more details about the plot as of yet. But in the meantime you can get your fill from Winona in season two of Stranger Things, kicking off on Netflix on 27 October.
We repeat: This is not a drill. It’s a Nineties-filled dream come true.
