If you’ve scoured Instagram and Twitter in search of Cate Blanchett’s official accounts (just us?) then you can finally throw in the towel, because the Oscar-winner has revealed that she despises social media, saying it causes “rivalry and jealousy.”
The Blue Jasmine star also thinks selfies are “pathetic”.
In an interview with Yahoo! Beauty, Blanchett, 46, says that social media is fostering a self-obsessed and insecure culture.
“People constantly are taking pictures of ourselves to send them to people to see if they like me, ‘Do they like me?” says Blanchett.
"It's pathetic, the whole thing about people worrying about what other people are going to think.”
Comparing selfie culture to her own career, in which she is scrutinised by the camera on a daily basis, Blanchett says “of course you want people to go see the films that you make” but, “I’m not out there saying, ‘Do they like the way I look? Do they like that look on the red carpet?’
The winner of this year’s prestigious BFI Fellowship and star of upcoming films Carol and Truth, also has issues with social media’s obsession with ‘likes’.
“The like and the dislike is just totally primary schoolyard. I cannot for the life of me work out why adults are participating in that shit,” she says.
Despite the negative comments, Blanchett does accept that social media has some positive attributes, including its ability to subvert popular opinion and bring people together.
“There's a subversive quality to the internet, and I do think there's a genuine ability to connect.”
But she remains staunch in her belief that the negative elements are overriding and lead to a ‘grass is greener’ attitude which results in jealousy between friends, saying:
“The downside with social media is it divides people really quickly and sets up rivalry and jealousy and a sense of the life over there is better than the life over here."
We hang our heads in shame.
