We all dread watching an old video of ourselves and for Rachel McAdams it happened on national television this week, when she was played her original audition tape for romantic drama The Notebook.

While on American television show Today, the actress was asked about the video which has resurfaced on the internet following the tenth anniversary of the Nicholas Sparks adaptation. McAdams, 35, replied, "I haven't seen it, so yes, that would be weird".

The presenter, Matt Lauer, then pulled out the recording which shows a young McAdams acting out an emotional scene as Allie Calhoun in the 2004 film.

When the star buried her face in her hands, Lauer joked, "Why are you cringing? You got the part! It worked out well".

The actress who also starred as teen villain Regina George in hit chick-flick Mean Girls recently responded to rumours that she intimidated co-star Lindsay Lohan during filming.

"If anything, I was in awe of her talent," said McAdams in an interview with Allure magazine.

"I looked at her as this experienced actor, and she had great comedic timing.

"It’s just funny to hear that because you never know what people are thinking," continued the star. “We all try to act like we’ve got it together.”

McAdams is currently promoting her latest film A Most Wanted Man, a spy thriller based on John le Carre's book of the same name. It stars Robin Wright, Willem Dafoe and Philip Seymour Hoffman in his last completed film.

Speaking about Hoffman, who died in February, McAdams said, "I learned so much from him. He really takes you under — he really took me under his wing. You feel very taken care of, but at the same time there’s an element of danger: There’s a crackle in every scene.

"He makes sure the stakes are very high, and there’s a safety there, too. He had so much natural, raw talent, but he worked so hard, too. He really worked for it and didn’t let up. I’m sure that wasn’t easy."
