Why Victoria Beckham believes you shouldn’t “pretend to know everything” in the workplace
7 years ago
With a decade of designing under her belt, VB reflects on her fashion journey and the joys of a British autumn.
Victoria Beckham is surrounded by giant green cheese plants, sat on a navy-blue velvet couch. The woody scent of Diptyque’s Feu de Bois fills the room, a candle on every desk, and there are giant black and white shots of her family on the wall.
The entirety of Beckham’s fashion operation has just moved into this new space in Hammersmith, the office upgrade coinciding with the brand’s 10th anniversary. “Seeing the evolution of the brand and watching my customer grow with me has been something I’ve been so proud of,” she says. Stylist caught up with Beckham as she launches her collaboration with chocolatier Pierre Marcolini.
What would you tell someone who wanted to start their own brand?
Don’t pretend to know everything, surround yourself with really smart people and you will learn something every day.
Before you became a designer, what was your most memorable fashion moment?
When I was in the Spice Girls, Donatella [Versace] flew me and my best friend to Lake Como, we sat front row at the Versace show with Demi Moore. We were taken shopping and I remember standing in the mirror in Versace clothes and naively saying that I would like to change the length and other details. Now the thought of redesigning what Donatella had designed! I would never. But that was such a moment for me.
How would you sum up your personal style now?
Uncomplicated, flattering, chic, appropriate, tasteful and luxury.
You’ve just launched a collaboration with chocolatier Pierre Marcolini, how did you decide on flavours?
Pierre brought over lots of pots of chocolate for me and the team to try and it was a case of dig in with a spoon. The passion fruit really got me, it was so surprising and fresh.
What are you watching on TV?
Killing Eve like the rest of the nation, it’s brilliant.
What else forms part of your cultural life?
I love contemporary art, it helps me switch off, in fact I was at a gallery this morning seeing Nicola Tyson’s work – her eye for colour actually inspired my s/s 2019 collection.
Autumn is in full swing – what’s the best thing about this season?
I think London is the most beautiful city in the world and when the colours start to change there is nowhere else like it – it makes me proud to be British. Even better is being able to wear big, cosy knits and sunglasses at the same time.
