Stylist turns 10
The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby: “I wish I didn’t let fear get the better of me in 2009”
In October 2009, the first issue of Stylist was published and magazine history was made. Now, 10 years later, we look back at what Vanessa Kirby was about to do in that very year, before her breakthrough role in The Crown.
The Crown fans will know Vanessa Kirby best for her role as the rebellious Princess Margaret in series one and two of the hit Netflix show. But, in the upcoming third series, Helena Bonham Carter will be taking over the role as it follows the royal family’s later years.
Fans will be able to watch Kirby in new big-screen drama The World to Come, which is currently in post-production. In the meantime, Stylist caught up with the actor to find out what she was doing a decade ago, to help celebrate our 10th birthday.
From eye-opening books to starting her theatre career, here’s everything Kirby was doing in 2009…
I was about to…
Go up north to start my first ever job, three plays in a row at The Octagon Theatre in Bolton. David Thacker taught me so much, I owe him a lot. I’d worked with Andy Johnson – him and his book The Excellent Audition Guide really changed my life too.
I was reading…
Loves Executioner – really starting to understand that if you change your insides, the outsides will follow.
I was listening to…
I don’t even know! God, I have the worst taste in music. I just listen to the same songs over and over and annoy my sister who I live with.
I was wearing…
Really nothing of any note. I’ve never been naturally fashionable. My best friend Anna is just effortless. I just always wear jeans and boots and hope for the best.
I was watching…
I gave myself a film education, actors and directors I most admired. So I watched all of Cassavetes; Gena Rowlands has always been my greatest inspiration.
I was talking about…
The war in Iraq and how much I disagreed with it. That’s why Warchild is such a big part of my life now.
I was obsessed with…
Suddenly understanding the meat industry and how ignorant I had chosen to be about it. I read a book called Eating Animals by accident, I’d forgotten all my books on holiday and my brother handed me that one. It was such a beautiful book. It changed my perspective forever, I haven’t eaten meat since.
I wish I’d paid more attention to…
My thoughts and how I spoke to myself – often way more negatively than I ever would be to a friend – and not letting fear get the better of me.
Vanessa is an Audi Ambassador and currently drives an Audi S3 Sportback.
