They first came to international prominence in 2012, after their performance of an anti-Putin anthem in a Moscow cathedral saw two of their members thrown in jail.

Now, Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot are taking aim at Donald Trump with a new single – and with him, every man who thinks he has ownership over women’s bodies.

The new song, Straight Outta Vagina – an apparent nod to Straight Outta Compton, the 1988 single by legendary West Coast rappers N.W.A. – features characteristically provocative lyrics, including “Don’t play stupid, don’t play dumb – vagina’s where you’re really from”. 

A video for the track, which dropped earlier this week, is accompanied by an explanation of the band’s belief that “female power and female sexuality are yet… to be discovered. Discussed. Performed”.

The blurb states: “We’re still just about to build another roles, norms, ethics for vaginas owners [sic],” citing as evidence the fact that “women were slaves of the world for centuries” and that in most countries, women have had the vote for less than a century.

The “owner of vaginas”, the band makes clear, is not “some narcissistic stupid orange ape who’d claim that he could easily grab women by their pussies.” (We can’t imagine who they might be referring to.)

Instead, Pussy Riot proclaim: “the owner of vagina is a woman who wears her vag as a badge of honour.”

The video for Straight Outta Vagina was shot in Los Angeles, and shows Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova wearing white religious robes and the band’s trademark balaclava. She recorded the song with US musician Dave Sitek, whom she described as “one of the biggest feminists I’ve ever met”.

“This song could be considered an answer to Trump,” Tolokonnikova told the Guardian. “But I believe the idea of powerful female sexuality is much bigger than any populist megalomaniac man … Vagina is bigger than Trump.”

Tolokonnikova compared the spread of “patriarchal and misogynist ideas” to the proliferation of sexually transmitted disease.

“Politicians are praising ‘strong leadership’,” she said. “Trump openly supports the authoritarian methods of Vladimir Putin. And it’s scary. It’s not the world in which I want to live.”

Unusually for an American politician – particularly a Republican presidential nominee – Donald Trump has been relatively positive in his attitude towards authoritarian Russian president Putin. He has repeatedly asserted his desire for a closer relationship between Russia and the US, and even called on Russia to hack into his rival Hillary Clinton’s emails. (He later insisted he had been joking.)

Pussy Riot co-founder Masha Alyokhina, who is currently touring in the play Burning Doors with Belarus Free Theatre, is not taking part in Pussy Riot’s current music projects.

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina each spent 16 months in Russian penal colonies after they performed a “punk prayer”, criticising both Putin and the Russian Orthodox church, in Moscow’s Christ the Saviour Cathedral.

A third member of Pussy Riot, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was convicted alongside them but freed early on probation and her sentence suspended.
