It’s official: a second Spice Girls film is on the way

Spice Girls really are bringing back girl power in 2019.

Do you remember December 1997 when young girls across the UK slipped on platform shoes and leopard print dresses and filled out cinemas to see Spice World play out on the big screen? Of course you do, because the British musical comedy – featuring Baby, Ginger, Scary, Posh and Sporty Spice – was an instant hit for fans of all things girl power.

Now, according to the band’s manager, a second film inspired by the Nineties’ biggest girl band is in the works. That’s right, another Spice Girls movie is set to light up our screens in 2019.

In a recent interview with Billboard, Simon Fuller explained that the as-yet-untitled upcoming Spice Girls film will be animated, rather than live-action.

“What’s coming next is that we are going to be doing lots of exciting things. We’ll be making an animated movie and there’s lots of exciting plans to come,” Fuller told Billboard

The news comes months after the ladies – Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm – announced a reunion tour at the end of 2018. As expected, all dates have now sold out, and the band are set to play 11 different stadiums throughout the UK this year.

“To be honest with you, while it was clearly phenomenal, they are such an awesome phenomenon I expected it,” said Fuller, commenting on the successful sales.

“The last tour we did seven or eight years ago the demand was equal, if not maybe even more.

“It’s a global phenomenon. They’re more timely now than ever and it’s fantastic. I’m so happy for the girls. They deserve it.”

Since the tour was announced, both a Twitter (@SpiceGirls) and Instagram account (@SpiceGirlsNet) have been created as the women prepare to bring back girl power this year.

It remains unclear whether Victoria Beckham will make an appearance in the animated film, as she is definitely not joining the Spice Girls on their reunion tour.

During an appearance on Loose Women, Mel B revealed more details about her decision not to join the rest of the band.

“It’s just the four of us that are fully confirmed, but you know, Vic might join us at some point,” she said.

Asked if she will attend one of the shows and then decide to join them, Mel said: “I hope so, I think it’d be a shame if she didn’t.”

She added: “She’s got a full-on life with all of her work commitments and her fashion line and her kids, so, she’s just kind of not committing just yet.”

No other details about the film have been released yet – but we’re ready for it to spice up our lives.
