Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas defy wedding expectations with surprise Las Vegas elopement
6 years ago
Following an incredible night at the Billboard Music Awards, Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas opted for a surprise Las Vegas wedding ceremony.
Sansa Stark has celebrated two ill-fated weddings in HBO’s Game of Thrones – both of which she was forced into against her will. In the real world, however, Sophie Turner has found happiness with her musician boyfriend, Joe Jonas.
And now, following an exciting night at the Billboard Music Awards, the pair have been filmed tying the knot in a Las Vegas chapel. Which will no doubt have come as a surprise to fans, considering the countless reports circling the internet about the couple’s plans for a ’star-studded four-day ceremony’ the ’same weekend as Glastonbury’.
The first hint of Turner and Jonas’ Las Vegas elopement came via Diplo’s Instagram Stories, where the DJ shared a clip of the GoT star in a white dress, entering a Vegas chapel with Jonas and his brothers, who were dressed in suits.
“Gonna hit up this wedding real quick,” Diplo captioned the clip.
In Diplo’s Stories, Turner can be seen walking down the aisle in a white bridal ensemble and veil – and it appears as if an Elvis Presley impersonator officiated the ceremony as country music duo Dan + Shay performed their hit song Speechless.
After exchanging vows, Jonas and Turner swapped ring pops instead of wedding bands (because obviously). And ET has since confirmed the union with a copy of the couple’s marriage license.
Turner and Jonas went public with their engagement in 2017, via corresponding Instagram posts. Both shared an image of the Game of Thrones star with her hand on top of the singer’s, showing off her diamond engagement ring against their black clothes.
“I said yes,” Turner captioned the photo. Meanwhile, Jonas wrote: “She said yes.”
Turner later explained that she did not view her engagement as an achievement, pointing out: “There’s this weird misconception that being married is the greatest thing that’ll ever happen to you.
“I’ve always found that my career is something I work for, and when I achieve something, there’s a sense that this is the greatest thing I’ll do in my life.”
She added: “I’ve always found that my career is something I work for, and when I achieve something, there’s a sense that this is the greatest thing I’ll do in my life.”
No wonder, then, that the Dark Phoenix star made a point of holding off on wedding dress shopping.
Indeed, in an interview with People last year, Turner dismissed their questions about her bridal gown with a shrug, saying: “I think fashion is ever-changing. You never know what’s going to be fashionable next year, so I think I am just holding off for now.”

While the couple have made a point of attending a number of red carpet events together of late, Turner has made a point of keeping her and Jonas’ romance “very private” – and for good reason.
“I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship,” Turner told the Sunday Times.
And, during an interview with Marie Claire, the actor went on to add said that being part of a celebrity couple can make you “feel like you’re living in a fishbowl”.
“It’s frustrating [that] it’s the most mundane things that make the news—how boring!” she said, before going on to explain that she doesn’t even need to be out with Jonas to receive unwanted attention.
“I find it really rude, and I will be rude back,” she said, referring to fans who try to secretly take photos of her. “It’s such an invasion of privacy. I could be out with my mum on her birthday and I will ask them to delete it. I would much rather them come up and ask for a photo. I will probably be fine with it… unless I look s**t.”
However, while ‘Jophie’ fans will no doubt be incredibly excited about Turner and Jonas’ surprise elopement, we have a feeling that Maisie Williams – aka Turner’s BFF, on-screen sister and co-star – might be a little disappointed that she didn’t get to fulfill her sacred Maid of Honour duties.
The Arya Stark actor previously said: “I already got [bridesmaid]! [The wedding] is very, very exciting. It’s kind of bizarre though.
“We’re waiting until this season [of Game of Thrones] is done until we get into any [wedding planning], but I think she’s already letting her little heart wander and imagine.”
Considering how close ‘Mophie’ are, though, we’re confident that Williams will forgive her BFF for forging ahead without her in a spontaneous ceremony. However, this could mean, just maybe, that Turner and Jonas are intending to go ahead with a second, more formal ceremony later this year.
All we can say is this: thank god The Rains of Castamere didn’t start playing during the ceremony, eh? Our hearts just can’t take another Red Wedding…
