Like many people do on holiday, Kesha has been posting several pictures of herself on Instagram enjoying a beach break in Mexico.

But after publishing three selfies in front of the sea, it appears standard social-media shaming made itself known in the comments box, as the singer felt she needed to respond to those discussing her body.

Writing alongside another picture of herself standing in the sea, middle fingers raised, she explained: “I have been battling depression and an eating disorder for a while now. my career is in a strange place and it feels like I'm fighting an uphill fight some days. but I have decided to take my life back. my freedom. my happiness. my voice. my worth.

“I will not just fucking be quiet and hide. today I will say fuck it and live. So FUUUUUUUUCK it. today I'm making that choice. AND IM HAPPY AS A DAMN CLAM. and also a big ol fuck u if u wanna hate on my body. just remember that makes u look like a dickhead [sic].”

The 29-year-old's bid to get out of her recording contract with Sony's Kemosabe Records was dismissed last month by a New York judge.

The singer alleges she was sexually and emotionally abused by producer Dr Luke (real name Lukasz Gottwald), who runs Kemosabe Records, over a 10-year period. The court ruled her human rights were not being infringed by her contract because she could work without Gottwald's involvement. Her team argued that her pop career had been and would continue to be damaged.

Kesha filed a lawsuit against Gottwald in 2014 alleging, among other things, sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, gender violence and emotional distress, which she says caused her bulimia, depression, stress and panic attacks. The case will be heard next year.
