As it was announced that Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton will be attending the Womens’ Finals at Wimbledon, Serena Williams opened up about the“wonderful friendship” that she shares with the former Suits star.
It’s no secret that Serena Williams and Meghan Markle are good pals. The tennis star was among the many A-list guests that looked on as Markle tied the knot with Prince Harry, and she has since been spotted by Markle’s side as the former Suits star transitions into her new role as the Duchess of Sussex.
And now Markle will be returning the favour in a show of support as Williams prepares for the Womens’ Finals at Wimbledon this Saturday (14th July).
Speaking to press at Wimbledon earlier this week, Williams described how she and Markle have a “wonderful friendship”, with Markle being a regular fixture at her games for the past few years. While some might expect that the enormity of Markle’s new role as a member of the royal family may have affected the dynamic between the two friends, Williams explained that absolutely nothing has changed.
“Every year for a couple years she comes out to Wimbledon, has supported me,” the tennis ace remarked.
“Now she’s supporting me in a different role. But our friendship is still exactly the same.”
With this not-so-subtle hint of a royal appearance at her match on Saturday, when Williams learned that Kensington Palace had indeed confirmed Markle’s attendance, together with the Duchess of Cambridge, Williams exclaimed that she was “look[ing] forward to it”.
While the Duchess of Sussex will be there on official business and will be performing royal duties ahead of the game, there is no doubt that Williams will have her friend’s full support when she takes to the court.
“We always have supported each other, just been there for each other through a lot,” Williams revealed.
Markle will also have some support of her own as she takes on official royal duties ahead of the match, as the seasoned Kate Middleton (one of Williams’ most ‘badass’ women, FYI) will be by her side as the pair step out at their first event together.
Now that’s a girls’ day out we’d like to be part of.
