Kim Cattrall all but confirms Sex and the City spin-off series

Like the Spice Girls and Friends, rumours of a Sex and the City comeback started swirling pretty much as its stars parted ways in 2004. A third spin-off movie seemed unlikely after the broadly terrible reception to Sex and the City 2 (described by various critics as “blatantly anti-Muslim”“borderline racist” and “the most insulting and dangerous film for women since Pretty Woman”, but that hasn’t stopped those involved with the show from suggesting that we might not have seen the last of the girls.

And now, Kim Cattrall has dropped a huge hint that she might be returning to our screens – in her own Samantha Jones spin-off series.

After US talk show host Wendy Williams discussed the rumours that Cattrall was in talks with HBO to reprise her role as the straight-talking, sexually empowered Jones (“Yes, please”), Cattrall got in touch over Twitter.

“I’m so unbelievably flattered & moved,” she wrote, replying to a tweet Williams had posted on the topic. “Can’t WAIT 2 get back to the series business of making u all laugh! Fingers x’d.”

In response to an election-themed tweet from a fan who opined that a Samantha Jones spin-off series would “make America Great Again”, Cattrall wrote: “Funny. Very sweet and funny.”

Earlier this year, Sarah Jessica Parker told reporters that she wasn’t opposed to the idea of a SATC reunion – but kept any details vague.

“I don’t think any of us have said no,” she said in September. “I don’t know whether it’s a series or the movie… I think that remains an open question and discussion that will continue until it’s been resolved. I think that’s always a possibility, definitely.”

But Cattrall’s tweets seem to confirm that a reboot is actually in the works. Fingers crossed, indeed.
