Comedian Sarah Millican has written a candid article about her sadness over having her appearance picked apart after her Baftas appearance last year.

In a column for the Radio Times, the host of The Sarah Millican Television Show detailed the events in the lead up to the Baftas last year, and her excitement at attending having been nominated alongside Alan Carr, Ant and Dec, and Graham Norton.

Before the big day she excitedly went to John Lewis to purchase a dress with her friend as "fancy expensive designer shops are out for me as I’m a size 18, sometimes 20, and I therefore do not count as a woman to them".

But she found a dress she loved, which she says was chosen when "both my friend and I oohed" (that's how we always do it too).

Finally at the awards, Millican discusses how intimidating the red carpet is but that she got a few laughs from people when they asked who she was wearing ("John Lewis"). No one, however, asked what her husband was wearing (it was an ASDA tux, by the way).

During the awards do she had a great time and even met Matt Le Blanc but then when she was on the way home, she checked Twitter and the masses began to pull apart her outfit.

She explains; '(There were) Literally thousands of messages from people criticising my appearance. I was fat and ugly as per usual. My dress (the one that caused ooohs in a department store fitting room?) was destroyed by the masses. I looked like a nana, my dress was disgusting, was it made out of curtains, why was I wearing black shoes with it.

I cried. I cried in the car.

And that wasn’t the end. The next day, I was in newspapers pilloried for what I was wearing. I was discussed and pulled apart on Lorraine.'

Alas, Millican isn't attending the event this year not because she wasn't invited (she is and is nominated again) but because she's going to be working. But, she says, if she were to attend she'd wear the same outfit, to prove a point that it shouldn't be about what she's wearing.

"I’m sorry. I thought I had been invited to such an illustrious event because I am good at my job. Putting clothes on is such a small part of my day. They may as well have been criticising me for brushing my teeth differently to them."
