The 2017 Golden Globes made headlines for a number of reasons – not least of all because Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield were spotted in a joyous embrace.
It was definitely one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” moments. The pair had been sat alongside one another during the show – with Deadpool’s Reynolds nominated for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
So, when he lost to La La Land’s Ryan Gosling, he naturally turned to The Amazing Spider-Man star for support.
Here’s a little reminder of what happened next…
We particularly love how Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, turns around to see her husband locking lips with someone else, and simply throws back her head and laughs.
In a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Garfield found himself under interrogation: why did he and Reynolds kiss? And what was the thought process behind it?
His answer was, quite simply, perfect.
“I just wanted Ryan to know that I loved him, no matter whether he won or lost,” the actor explained.
“I just wanted him to know that [winning] doesn't matter, it's how you play the game.”
Garfield added: “He showed up, he gave his all, it doesn't change anything in my heart.”
The kiss – which has been dubbed the stuff of Spideypool dreams by comic-book fans everywhere – sparked a huge conversation on Twitter, with many people congratulating the actors on taking their bromance to the next level.
“I mean, I’m happy for them,” said Gosling, when shown a clip of the kiss by the folks at ET Online. “Honestly, you know? Good for them.”
Others, however (Piers Morgan, for instance), were less pleased with what they claimed to be a “weird” display of affection.
It’s not the first time that Reynolds has addressed the #Spideypool fandom; the actor has said that he is keen to explore Deadpool’s sexuality in future films – just as is done in the comics.
Speaking in February last year, he said that he loves that his character identifies as pansexual, adding: “I love that he can break any boundary, In the future, I hope that we can do that more.”
He also hinted that he would like his character to have a boyfriend at some point in the future, saying: “I certainly wouldn’t be the guy standing in the way of that.
“That would be great.”
Garfield, likewise, has called upon Hollywood to tell more diverse love stories; in 2013, he revealed that he had asked producer Matt Tolmach to change Spidey’s girlfriend, Mary-Jane, into a male character.
“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he told EW. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! […] So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”
Garfield even had an actor in mind, adding: “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better – we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
