Watch Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield's joyous embrace at the Golden Globes

Comic book fans have, for as long as we can remember, dreamed about Spiderman and Deadpool getting together.

And, at the 2017 Golden Globes, all of our Spideypool fantasies came true (sort of) when actors Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield locked lips for a passionate embrace.

Reynolds and Garfield, who play the respective superheroes on the big screen, were sat alongside one another during the ceremony.

So, when Reynolds missed out to Ryan Gosling in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy category, he decided to seek comfort in the arms of someone dear to him.

Cue a bemused Blake Lively turning around to see her husband start making out with Garfield.

Lively, after the briefest of milliseconds, threw back her head and laughed the whole thing off, before turning her attention back to Gosling’s acceptance speech.

The La La Land star had no idea that Reynolds and Garfield had locked lips when his name announced, until later on in the show.

ET’s Kevin Frazier met up with him behind the scenes, and showed him a clip of the kiss – much to the astonishment of his co-star (and Garfield’s ex-girlfriend) Emma Stone.

“What?” she asked, leaning in to take a look for herself. “They did?”

Her face lit up as she watched the smooch play out on screen, before she turned away with a smile. “That’s hilarious,” she said.

Gosling, for his part, seemed to view the kiss as a sweet tribute.

“I mean, I’m happy for them,” he said. “Honestly, you know? Good for them.”

Stone agreed, adding: “I’m happy for them too.”

However one person who clearly wasn’t entertained by the spontaneous smooch was, of course, Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan.

Unaware that Reynolds was kissing The Amazing Spider-Man’s Garfield, the seasoned misogynist said: “Ryan Reynolds full kissing some guy in the audience – a proper on tongue job.

“It’s a bit odd. Everyone was like, ‘woah, what’s going on there Ryan?’”

His weary co-host Susanna Reid, unable to deal with Morgan’s moronic bulls**t so early in the morning, replied: “Ryan Reynolds, just to point out, is married to Blake Lively?”

“I wasn’t questioning his sexuality,” Morgan snapped back. “I was saying he kissed a bloke with tongues at the Golden Globes. It’s not something you would expect Ryan Reynolds to do.”

Some viewers accused Morgan of making an offensive remark with one viewer calling him a "homophobe".

“Piers Morgan just claimed on @GMB that two men kissing is 'not normal behaviour,' tweeted one user. “Why is he in such a prominent position within the media?”

Another posted: “Why is kissing another man weird, Piers? Homophobe.”

The GMB host later attempted to defend himself, tweeting: “I said two STRAIGHT men snogging each other at an awards ceremony on TV seemed a bit weird.”

It’s not the first time that Reynolds has addressed the #Spideypool fandom; the actor has said that he is keen to explore Deadpool’s sexuality in future films – just as is done in the comics.

Speaking in February last year, he said that he loves that his character identifies as pansexual, adding: “I love that he can break any boundary, In the future, I hope that we can do that more.”

He also hinted that he would like his character to have a boyfriend at some point in the future, saying: “I certainly wouldn’t be the guy standing in the way of that.

“That would be great.”

Garfield, likewise, has called upon Hollywood to tell more diverse love stories; in 2013, he revealed that he had asked producer Matt Tolmach to change Spidey’s girlfriend, Mary-Jane, into a male character.

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ,” he told EW. “And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?  It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

Garfield even had an actor in mind, adding: “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better—we’d have interracial bisexuality!”
