Emmys 2019: Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the Fleabag team officially had the time of their lives at the awards ceremony

Phoebe Waller-Bridge and the Fleabag team reunited at the Emmys last night – and it was everything we could have wanted and more.

It’s no secret that we’re completely obsessed with Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Honestly, who isn’t?

Besides the fact that Fleabag season two was literally all we could talk about when it hit our screens back in March this year, Waller-Bridge has repeatedly stolen our hearts with her characteristic wit and, perhaps most importantly, her refusal to be anything else but herself.

So, in true Waller-Bridge form, the 2019 Emmys were something to be remembered.

Taking home four awards (two for herself and two for Fleabag itself) Waller-Bridge’s acceptance speeches were, of course, truly iconic.

Her first award of the night came in the form of ‘Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series’. Taking to the stage to collect the award in her beautifully celestial golden dress, Waller-Bridge’s shock at winning the award was evident from her reaction.

“I find writing really, really hard and really painful, but I’d like to say just honestly from the bottom of my heart that the reason that I do it is this,” she said, jokingly gesturing at the Emmy award in her hand. “So it’s made it all really worth it guys! A huge thank you to the Fleabag family who have been behind every single word of this.

“It’s just really wonderful to know that a dirty, pervy, angry, messed-up woman can make it to the Emmys, so thank you so much,” she added. Iconic.

But, of course, that wasn’t the end of the Waller-Bridge gold. After it was announced that she had won the award for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series,’ the Fleabag star made her way to the stage again – but was clearly unprepared to win more than one award.

“I find acting really hard and painful,” she repeated as she opened her acceptance speech, receiving lots of laughter from the audience. “To be nominated with these unbelievable actors whom I’ve just looked up to and watched and laughed at and with means so much.”

And the night didn’t end there for Waller-Bridge and the Fleabag team. While those were the only two awards won by Waller-Bridge herself, Fleabag itself claimed two more accolades: one for Harry Bradbeer for ‘Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series,’ and one for ‘Best Comedy Series.’

“I think for a director, something like Fleabag only comes along once in your life,” Bradbeer said. “Thank you Phoebe for coming into my life like some kind of glorious grenade. Scientists are still trying to work out how someone so incredibly talented can be so utterly lovely.”

By the time the fourth award had come around, Waller-Bridge’s facial expression was one that can only be described as completely stunned. Accepting the award with the Fleabag cast and crew stood behind her – including the show’s famous ‘Hot Priest’ Andrew Scott – the actress shared her disbelief with the audience.

“This is getting ridiculous!” she opened. “Fleabag started as a one-woman show at the Edinburgh festival in 2014, and the journey has been absolutely mental to get here.”

“Season two would not have exploded in the way that it did if it wasn’t for Andrew Scott, who came into our Fleabag world like a whirlwind and gave a performance of such depth and complexity it elevated the whole thing,” she added.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after the show, Waller-Bridge confirmed her complete disbelief at the whole evening – something she’d already conveyed through her incredible reactions and facial expressions.

“The whole thing feels completely ridiculous,” she laughed. “It’s so exciting. I’m so pleased to be here.”
