Jimmy Kimmel was the host of this year’s Academy Awards – and, as so many people have pointed out, it wouldn’t be a Kimmel show without a selection of celebrities reading out mean tweets about themselves.

Thankfully the late night host brought this show staple to the 2017 Oscars, and let some of our favourite nominees read comments from trolls – all of which have been directed at them.

All in a light spirit, of course.

“I feel like if you went to lunch with Natalie Portman, she would only order a hot tea with lemon and maybe some toast,” the bemused Jackie star read from her phone. “Definitely not an entrée though.”

Portman then turned sideways on, so that the camera had a good view of her pregnant stomach, before firing back: “You’re wrong.”

The next actor to step up to the challenge was Ryan Gosling, who read out: “Oh, look at me, I’m Ryan Gosling. I have perfect bone structure and kind eyes.

“Go f**k yourself, Ryan Gosling.”

Samuel L Jackson, meanwhile, learned that some social media trolls have accused him of having “resting fart face” – a fact which he was all too happy to agree with.

And Felicity Jones, much to her amusement, read one tweet which said: “Are we all just ignoring the fact that Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones have the same face?”

Jones’ twin, Redmayne, giggled as he learned that one troll had dubbed him the scum between her toes – while Whoopi Goldberg raised an eyebrow as she read: “Tanner raised his arms and my dad looks at his armpit hair and says, ‘You look like you have Whoopi Goldberg in a headlock.’”

Really?” she asked the troll in question. “That’s it?”

Not all of the tweets are necessarily mean, however; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s one suggests that he’s starring in a 1996 NBC sitcom (something we’d pay good money to watch), while Miles Teller apparently looks like a guy who would request Gangnam Style from the DJ at a wedding he’s just crashed.

Is that really such a bad thing? We think not.

Writing about the segment, Kimmel’s team said: “The Oscars are a celebration of the movies and those who lift others up, but we must also not forget those who push those same people down. They are internet trolls who keep celebrities grounded day after day, night after night.
