Emma Stone uses Oscars 2017 dress to make powerful feminist statement

Emma Stone walked away with the gong for Best Actress at the 2017 Oscars – and, while she refrained from getting political in her acceptance speech, she used her glittering golden Givenchy gown to make a subtle feminist statement on the red carpet.

Dressed in a fringed flapper dress, Stone styled her 1920s look with retro curls, geometric earrings, a vintage red lip… and a unique accessory.

We are talking, of course, about the Planned Parenthood pin that Stone had pinned underneath the left strap of her gown.

The 28-year-old La La Land star did not need to voice her reason for donning the small golden pin at Hollywood’s most important night; earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning federal funds that promote abortion around the world, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

However, the non-profit women’s reproductive health organisation has said that it will forfeit the $100 million it had received annually from the US government in order to continue providing free information about safe abortions to women all around the world.

“We cannot — and will not — deny life-saving services to the world’s poorest women. We will work with governments and donors to bridge the funding and service gaps the Global Gag Rule creates,” the group said in a statement. “We will ensure that women can exercise their rights and access safe abortion and family planning.”

Stone was not the only star to lend her support to Planned Parenthood; Dakota Johnson, who plays Ana Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey, also attached the same delicate golden pin to her clutch bag.

Stone, who has already won a Golden Globe and Bafta award for her role in La La Land, beat the likes of Natalie Portman, Ruth Negga, Meryl Streep, and Isabelle Huppert to the gong for Best Actress.

In her acceptance speech, she praised her fellow nominees, saying it was “an honour” to stand alongside them – before going on to pay homage to her director, Damien Chazelle, and her co-star (and good friend), Ryan Gosling.

“Thank you for making me laugh and for always raising the bar and for being the best partner in this crazy adventure,” she told him from the stage.

Stone went on to promise that she would individually find all of the film’s crew and “hug the hell” out of her friends when feeling “re-enters” her body.

She added: “I still have a lot of growing and learning to do and this guy is a symbol on that journey.”
