Nikki Reed and her husband, Ian Somerhalder, have become first-time parents.

The news was confirmed via E! News, which revealed that the actors welcomed their baby daughter into the world on 25 July.

And the pair have chosen a beautiful Sanskrit name for their little girl: Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder.

Bodhi means “awakened” or “enlightenment” – and it is also the name of the sacred ficus tree (ficus religiosa) under which Lord Buddha sat and obtained his enlightenment. For this reason, the Buddhist concept of Bodhi is spiritual awakening and freedom from the cycle of life.

Keen to get away from the cycle of life themselves, Reed and Somehalder have also confirmed their plans to take a “month of silence” with their newborn.

Speaking with Fit Pregnancy, Reed revealed earlier this week: “We’ll take the baby’s first month for ourselves.

“After the baby arrives, we’re doing one month of silence. Just the three of us, no visitors, and we’re turning off our phones too, so there’s no expectation for us to communicate.

“Otherwise, every five minutes it would be, ‘How are you feeling? Can we have a picture?’”

The Twilight star added: “You don’t get those first 30 days back, and we want to be fully present.”

Reed has become a prominent voice in the animal rights and environmental movement, through her work on her husband’s animal NGO (Somerhalder Foundation), in her role as ambassador for the Humane Society of the United States, and by creating her very own vegan fashion range.

Speaking about her passion for animal rights in an interview with eluxemagazine.com, Reed said: “These issues matter, because we are all connected.

“As I have said before, the joke is on us. We are only a part of this planet, we don’t rule the planet. So if rhinos or elephants being poached don’t matter to you or the thought of sharks killed for ‘shark fin soup’ doesn’t upset you, then find something that does, because we’re all connected.”

She added: “Standing up for what you believe in gives you purpose, and I think at the end of the day that’s what we all want to achieve in life.”
