The first images of Watts' remarkable makeover show the 43-year-old actress fully embracing her transformation into the late princess.

From the coiffured hair to the heavy eyeliner - along with with Diana's slightly nervous body language and famous sideways glances - Watts has perfected her "Diana" look, above

British-born Watts, who found fame on Australian TV before becoming a Hollywood star, will depict Diana's life in her final years, including her secret romance with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, and her untimely death in a car crash in Paris 1997, with her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed.

The King Kong star previously admitted she was "absolutely terrified" of playing the former royal and was worried that she did not look enough like her.

"Look, I’m a great admirer of Princess Diana but I look in the mirror and can’t see I have any resemblance," Watts told reporters earlier this year. "It worries me, but the film makers seem to see something. I never met Princess Diana though I would have liked to."

Watts also said of Diana, "She is a part of our history, an incredible woman and fascinating but a tragic ending."

The film's director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, has described Watts as "a truly exceptional actress" who embodied "the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."

The Help star Jessica Chastain was originally set for the starring role, but pulled out last year.
