Mindy Kaling, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon have been working hard together on bringing Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time to the big screen.
So, naturally, the trio of talented women have become very close over the past few months.
Strike that: they’ve gone from being co-workers to pretty much best friends.
Yet, despite developing a fierce friendship, it seems Kaling still managed to surprise her new besties when she ever so casually dropped a bombshell on them midway through a promotional photocall.
Winfrey explains she was standing in the film’s press line at Disney’s D23 expo earlier this month when her castmate told her that she’s expecting.
“That’s when she told me. My mouth dropped,” says Winfrey, in an interview with People. “‘What did you just say?’ she said, ‘Oh, Oprah, I don’t think you know. I’m five months pregnant.’
“And I said, ‘Whaaaat?!’”
Winfrey continues: “That was it, and we just kept smiling. And then I said to [Witherspoon], ‘Did you know?’ and she said, ‘I just found out, too.’
“And then I said to [Wrinkle director Ava DuVernay], ‘Did you know?’ And she said, ‘I just found out.’”
Winfrey says that “none” of the Wrinkle team knew ahead of that moment, but adds: “I’m excited for her.”

It makes sense that Kaling – who has yet to comment on her pregnancy to the press herself – didn’t mention it to her pals until now. After all, they’ve had a lot on their minds. Like, say, making one of the most anticipated Disney film adaptations. Like, ever.
A Wrinkle in Time weaves a magical story centring on Meg Murry – a young girl whose father, a government scientist, has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract.
Joined by a schoolmate and her younger brother, the brave 13-year-old sets off on a journey across space and time to save him – finding help in the form of three badass supernatural beings.
Witherspoon will reportedly take on the role of Mrs Whatsit, a two-billion-year-old celestial being who (at first) looks like a grandmotherly hobo.
Kaling will play Mrs Who, a bilingual being who finds it “difficult to verbalise” in her own words.
And Winfrey, meanwhile, is confirmed to take on the role of the mysterious Mrs Which, who is undeniably the wisest – and the leader – of the trio.
Better still, Disney are working hard to ensure that the adaptation is fuelled by girl power from all sectors. They’ve got Selma director Ava DuVernay on board to direct the science fiction fantasy, while Frozen’s Jennifer Lee has already penned the script.
We can’t wait for it to hit our screens in 2018.
