After the results of the US presidential election were announced last week, many people were devastated. And as Hillary Clinton supporters struggle to make sense of Trump’s victory, they’ve been seeking motivation and comfort however they can.
For some, this means donating to causes that could be vulnerable under a Trump administration, taking part in the wave of anti-Trump protests sweeping the States from New York to Oregon, or tagging friends in endless Joe Biden/Obama memes.
But for others, hope for the future comes in the shape of one woman: the current first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.
Despite the fact that she has never held public office or expressed a desire to occupy the Oval Office, social media has been awash with just-kidding-but-also-not-really calls for FLOTUS to run for the presidency in 2020. (Hey, a lack of political experience didn’t stop Trump.)
And just in case she hadn’t seen all the memes, an audience member decided to bring the matter to Obama’s attention at the White House on Monday.
In a video posted on BuzzFeed’s Twitter account, the first lady is seen delivering a speech at a summit for homeless veterans when somebody shouts from the crowd, “Run for president!”
With the cool grace and good humour we’ve all come to expect from the president’s family (sob), Obama replied jokingly: “Be quiet back there.”
Michelle said she would never make a bid for the White House at South By South West festival in March, adding that her concern for her daughters’ well-being stopped her wanting to follow in her husband’s footsteps.
“I’m going to continue to work with young people all over the world,” she said. “Not as president. I will not run for president. There are so many ways to impact the world and you don’t have to be president of the United States to do them.”
But you’ll notice that she wasn’t quite so emphatic this time around. Fingers crossed for a change of heart...
