The Duchess of Sussex made her official Trooping the Colour debut over the weekend – but some have questioned why Meghan Markle was stood behind the rest of the royal family.
On 19 May, Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in a star-studded royal wedding ceremony, thus becoming the new Duchess of Sussex.
And, last weekend (9 June), Markle joined her husband and his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the Trooping the Colour ceremony – her second formal outing as an official member of the royal family.
The couple arrived as part of the carriage procession at the event, which was organised to mark the Queen’s 92nd birthday. However, while many of Markle’s fans were pleased to see the former Suits star at the event (particularly as she made a point of breaking royal fashion rules again), some were of the opinion that she had been positioned a little too near the back of the balcony for their liking.
Explaining that this is all down to the royal “pecking order”, Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, tells PEOPLE: “She was not as prominent perhaps as some people might have expected, but there’s a pecking order.
“There was no slight intended, but William being the older, more senior brother would go out [first] with his wife.”
Little adds: “[Meghan] was still in a good position.
“She was central rather than the alternative of being in the front row and along the balcony to the left or right.”
It was recently confirmed that Markle – alongside her husband – will be undertaking an official visit to Australia, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga, and New Zealand in the autumn of this year.
And, as she’s been given the blessing of the palace to use her position to fight the good feminist fight, we have a feeling all eyes will be on the former UN Ambassador throughout her trip.
To quote Markle’s good friend, Priyanka Chopra: “This ever-smiling, strong free spirit found her prince, fell in love and in turn made a cynical world believe in fairy tales again…
“With her, what you see is real, and what you get is a relatable young woman with her heart and mind in the right place. Her compassion, evident in the causes she supports, and her drive to break down stereotypes – obvious in her actions – will connect her to a generation in much need of kindness.”
Chopra added: “More than anything else, Meghan is an important influencer in a world that needs strong public figures to respect and look up to. People the world can be inspired by.
“Meghan, standing shoulder to shoulder with Harry, will be a princess for the people.”
We don’t doubt it.
