It’s been 12 years (12 years!) since Mean Girls hit cinemas and gifted the world a surfeit of timeless catchphrases. And now, Rachel McAdams – otherwise known as the ultimate mean girl, Regina George – appears to have given the green light to a reunion.
McAdams was speaking to E! News earlier this week when she was asked if she’d consider taking part in the upcoming Mean Girls musical.
“Sure!” she replied. “I mean, I loved that movie. I love Tina Fey. I love the girls.”
McAdams also indicated that she’d be up for reuniting with Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert outside of the musical.
“I mean, to get to kind of have a reunion would be… we got to have a reunion at a photo shoot a couple of years ago and it was over like that and it wasn’t enough,” she continued. “I was back in it.”
And if a second Mean Girls movie was to catch up with the original cast 12 years after their high school days, McAdams had some ideas about what her character would be up to now.
“Regina’s probably had a few [babies],” she said, adding: “Babies who are plotting your demise in the womb.”
McAdams’ comments come just a week after Lindsay Lohan shared a "throwback Thursday" post on Instagram calling for another Mean Girls movie. Tagging McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Mark Waters – the director of Mean Girls and another classic ’00s Lohan vehicle, Freaky Friday – Lohan wrote: “Miss you all… sequel?”
It was announced earlier this month that the Mean Girls musical will premiere in Washington D.C., although a theatre and date have yet to be confirmed. As with the move version, Tina Fey is writing the script for the stage production.
Her husband, composer Jeff Richmond (who composed the titular song for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) is working on the music, alongside Tony-nominated lyricist Nell Benjamin, who wrote the songs for Legally Blonde: The Musical. In an interview in March, Fey described the upcoming musical as a “classic Broadway” show.
