Matt LeBlanc has shut down rumours of a Friends reunion.
With Nineties reboots and spin-offs running rampant as of late, there’s one show everyone wants to see more of than any other: Friends. Everyone, that is, except Matt LeBlanc.
The actor, famed for playing Joey Tribbiani, spoke out against a possible reunion during an interview with Australian radio station 97.3FM saying: “I think it’s better for people to just leave it.”
The Top Gear presenter went on to say that at 50, Joey would not be the same character people know and love: “I don’t think anyone wants to see Joey at his colonoscopy,” adding “that show was about a finite period in these six characters’ lives, between 20 and 30.”
The conversation was sparked after co-star Jennifer Aniston raised fans’ hopes on The Ellen Show last month. Responding to a spoof trailer for a Friends movie, Aniston fuelled speculation by saying “anything is possible” when asked about a potential reunion.
Aniston’s openness to more escapades from the six chums is a rare reaction, as most chatter from the programme’s cast and creatives has been negative.
In 2011, Ross Geller actor David Schwimmer told Hollyscoop: “I really love how it ended. I think it was kind of a perfect ending, and I can’t see any good reason to revisit it.”
And last year, Marta Kauffman, co-creator of the sitcom, told E! News: “There will never be a Friends reunion movie.” Kauffman went on to add a rather bleak: “Friends was about that time in your life when your friends are your family and once you have a family, there’s no need anymore.”
To be fair, LeBlanc’s reluctance to reprise his role of Joey is understandable. Many have selectively forgotten about the Friends spin-off series, Joey – a show that was panned by critics and cancelled quickly – so fans yearning for more is better than wishing for less.
Though we applaud Friends for quitting while they’re ahead, we still can’t help ourselves wishing for episode 237…
