Director Cate Shortland will be heading up the film.

Fans have been asking for it for several years. And now they’re finally getting it.

Yes, a Black Widow film is in the works – and we’ve finally found out who’s going to direct it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Cate Shortland has signed on to the project. Shortland is most famous for directing Lore, a film about a young woman and her family in Nazi Germany, and 2017 thriller Berlin Syndrome.

According to the Reporter, star Scarlett Johansson “pushed” for Shortland to be at the helm, having “admired her handling of the female lead in Lore”.

The new film, due to be released in 2020, is set before the first Avengers film– and fans are already excited.

Several petitions had cropped up over the last few years, all urging Marvel to give Johansson’s character her own film. Others suggest that the studio should release a film with all female characters.

“If we have learned anything recently, female-led superhero films can rule at the box office - just look at Wonder Woman. Marvel doesn’t wanted to be bested by DC, do they?” the petition’s authors wrote.

“Let’s bring a whole new definition to the term “girl fight”. Just think how empowering an all female superhero film would be for girls and women alike.”

While this may be some while off yet, the Black Widow film certainly has a female-centric outlook. Alongside director Shortland, writer Jac Schaeffer also worked on the remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels – a film that had the working title of Nasty Women.

And if you can’t wait for this, then another woman-led Marvel film is on its way. Captain Marvel, which followers superhero Carol Susan Jane Danvers, is out early next year.
