We’ve lost count of the number of Robin Hood films we’ve seen over the years; from Kevin Costner, to Russell Crowe, to Disney’s ever-so-foxy Brian Bedford, plenty of famous men have donned Robin’s green tights over the years, ready to rescue Maid Marian from the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.
But, this time, Marian’s taking charge of her own destiny. So of course she’s being played by the unstoppable force that is Margot Robbie.
The Suicide Squad actor will star as the heroic Maid Marian in her very own solo movie – and, spoiler, it’s going to be set years after the death of her legendary lover, Robin of Loxley. Because who actually needs Robin Hood in a movie about the Robin Hood literary universe, eh?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the titular maiden is set to take up her late lover’s cause (steal from the rich, give to the needy, wear nothing but Lincoln Green) in a bid to lead her people into “a pivotal war”.
The final battle will decide the fate of the kingdom – and, more importantly, it will rise Marian up as a legend in her own right. And about time, too.
It’s a feminist twist on a classic tale, so it makes sense that the project has some heavy-duty backing from Ghostbusters producer Amy Pascal, too.
However it remains to be seen who will be joining Robbie’s Marian in Sherwood Forest; after all, she’ll need a band of disbelieving and not-so-merry men to win over with her skills, fervour, and determination.
Or maybe, this time around, she’ll be leading a band of merry women to glory.
It's the second spinoff Robbie has in development right now. She’s also set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn – the standout star of DC’s Suicide Squad - in DC Entertainment's upcoming Gotham City Sirens movie.
A few months ago, David Ayer confirmed that Harley will be joined by two more of the badass women of Gotham City’s criminal underworld, Poison Ivy and Catwoman.
And, while casting has yet to be confirmed (Geneva Robertson-Dworet is still at work on the script), many fans are hoping that Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as the feline-loving cat burglar.
One thing’s for sure, it looks as if the future is seriously bright for female-led films… particularly when Margot Robbie is involved.
