Why Margot Robbie’s reaction to her first Oscar nomination has gone viral

Margot Robbie has been nominated for Leading Actress in a Motion Picture thanks to her standout role in I, Tonya – and we can all stand to a lot from her reaction video, which has pretty much broken the internet.

I, Tonya has already received rave reviews from critics as the year’s most irreverent – and unexpectedly inspiring – biopic to date.

Based on the life of disgraced skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie), the mockumentary film begins with a four-year-old girl being forced into an ice rink by her cruel and dismissive mother (Janney). Despite her mother’s negligence – and, later, her husband’s violent, bullying behaviour – Tonya rises among the ranks at the US Figure Skating Championships, but quickly discovers the sporting community has a big-time bias against her “white trash” background.

Of course, the film also shines a light on her ex-husband’s 1994 attack on Nancy Kerrigan, Harding’s biggest skating rival and Olympic teammate. However, instead of focusing on the “whacking” itself, the film digs deep to find the real human story at the centre of a scandal which saw Harding’s career completely destroyed – and reminds us of our complicity in her downfall.

“It was like being abused all over again, only this time it was by you,” says Robbie-as-Harding, describing what it felt like to find herself at the centre of the resulting media storm. “All of you. You’re all my attackers, too.”

With a performance like that, it’s no wonder that Robbie is riding her ice skates all the way to the 2018 Oscars.

Most actors and actresses tend to play it seriously cool when it comes to awards season: they share calm and collected posts on social media, thanking those who made their nomination possible and wishing their fellow nominees all the best of luck.

Robbie, though, has decided to own her phenomenal success and share her excitement with the world. And – as it’s her first ever Academy Award nomination – trust us when we say there’s a lot of excitement to be shared.

Check it out:

Robbie’s pure joy is cute, sure, but it is also a staunch reminder that we need to take time out of our busy schedules and not just acknowledge, but celebrate our achievements.

After all, many of us have been conditioned to believe that, after completing a significant goal, we need to move on to the next one immediately – but celebrating our wins is critically important to our happiness, wellbeing and future successes.

“Celebrating your wins not only feels great physically, but it reinforces the behaviour you want to show up when you face a new challenge or opportunity,” explains CEO Bill Carmody in an article for Inc.com.

“Conversely, if you fail to celebrate your many accomplishments, you are training your brain that what you are doing isn’t all that exciting and important. If every day feels mundane (even when you are crushing it) you will stop giving 110% of yourself and that will lead to lacklustre results.

“Simply put, the lack of celebration will lead to a feeling of emptiness that will result in less focus and decreased performance over time.”

Carmody adds that celebrating with friends, family and colleagues can also help to tighten your network and strengthen your bonds with those around you.

Overall, it’s pretty clear we need to be more like Robbie and take the time to own our successes, whenever and wherever we can.

Sure, they might not be Oscar nominations – but scoring that promotion, nailing that presentation or completing that big project you’ve been working on forever is every bit as worthy of the red carpet treatment (and a glass of wine), too.
