Over the weekend, rumours started swirling that Margot Robbie had secretly married her partner, British film director Tom Ackerley, in Australia.
Initially, neither Robbie or her reps commented publicly on the speculation – nor confirmed any of the titbits that had surfaced about the supposed ceremony, from the location (supposedly a white tepee at a luxurious property in Coorabell, Byron Bay) to the wedding menu (pizza, BBQ and Coco Pops, apparently).
On Tuesday morning, however, Robbie put an end to the did-they-didn’t-they guesswork in characteristic fashion: with a jokey Instagram post.
The 26-year-old Australian actress uploaded a photo of her kissing Ackerley with her ring finger sarcastically outstretched – and yep, there’s a big old diamond ring on it.
Robbie and assistant film director Ackerley have been together for three years, after meeting on the set of WWII drama Suite Française in 2013. (Ackerley was third assistant director on the film; Robbie played a Frenchwoman who sleeps with one of the Nazi soldiers occupying her village.) When Stylist met Robbie earlier this year, the low-key couple were still living in a rented house share in Clapham, south London, and had plans to move to L.A. later in 2016.
The ‘up yours’ post may well be the only public comment on her nuptials we’ll get from Robbie, who rarely talks about her relationship in interviews.
However, she has spoken in the past about how her relationship with Ackerley developed.
“I was the ultimate single gal,” she told Vogue in May, referring to when she met her now-husband. “The idea of relationships made me want to vomit. And then this crept up on me. We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot. Don’t be stupid and tell him that you like him.’
“And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Of course we’re together’,” she continued. “This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.”
All together now: aww.
