Maleficent: Angelina Jolie’s words on self-acceptance are highly relatable and reassuring
6 years ago
Maleficent star Angelina Jolie has talked about the importance of self-acceptance after sharing her own fears about not being “good enough”.
Angelina Jolie doesn’t seem like the kind of person who questions herself a lot. The actor, director, philanthropist, director and campaigner has confidently spoken before about learning resilience, the reality of not being liked by everyone and finding strength after a high profile breakup. But even one of the most successful actors in the world experiences those universal feelings of self-doubt.
Jolie spoke about this in a very relatable way at the premiere of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Talking about playing a Disney villain to Variety, Jolie said: “It reminds me and I hope others that there’s a part of us that is just unbridled. We just have to be who we are. We can’t be less than what we are. We can’t be less honest. We can’t be less fierce. We have to find ourselves and be free with it and be okay with it.”
She continued: “She [Maleficent] is trying her best. And I think where she fails is that she doesn’t believe in herself. She doesn’t believe that she’s a good mum. She doesn’t see herself as a mum.”
She then talked about her own doubts as a mother to her children, who attended the premiere with her.

Jolie added: “I questioned when I was first a mother whether I was good enough. And I think that a lot of good mums questioned whether or not they’re good enough. And I think there’s nothing wrong with that.”
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2012 film will see Jolie return to the role alongside Dakota Fanning’s Aurora. Michelle Pfeiffer also joins the cast as Queen Ingrith.

Disney has described the plot of the film as “the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect The Moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”
It will be released in UK cinemaes on 18 October, 2019.
Jolie should have no doubt that it’s going to be another big hit.
