#effyourbeautystandards: why this woman's "love handles" selfie is trending

A woman's black and white, skin-baring selfie has gone viral on Facebook with an overwhelming response to her body-positive caption about why she loves her "LOVE handles."

Mia Ortiz, who is a singer and cast member of US show Big Women: Big Love, has had 91,907 likes (at time of writing) on the Facebook post in which she poses in front of the mirror wearing a top tied up below her breasts to reveal her stomach and her tights rolled down on one side to show off her hip.

She explains that she was prompted to post the photo after someone told her that she had lost weight:

"Someone told me 'Mar you're losing weight,' I said 'Really? You think so? I eat a burger, fries and pizza like everyday.' "

She then asks:

"Why does size matter? Big or small...I love my LOVE handles! I don't care about having abs or eating a salad everyday. I do believe in taking healthier days and balance. I #celebratemysize everyday! I love my curves and body. If I want to lose weight it will be a personal choice and it shouldn't matter to anyone else but me. #imnoangel #plusisequal #effyourbeautystandards #bigwomenbig love"

Ortiz is the latest in a string of women to use the hashtags  #effyourbeautystandards and #celebratemysize in her social media posts in an effort to promote positive body image and end body shaming.

Sadly like many of the posts before hers, Ortiz's was met with a lot of hateful and negative comments, as well as lots of positive feedback on the selfie.

Many people were inspired by Ortiz's body-confidence, like this user who wrote:

"I honestly think you are an amazing woman. If you are comfortable with your body, love yourself for who you are, then nobody else's opinion should matter …I'm a curvier girl and I'm working my way to getting more confidence in myself. Everyone is beautiful in their own way regardless of race, gender, weight, etc."

And Ortiz was clearly undeterred by personal comments as she added to the post:

"I literally cannot keep up with all these comments. But I am unbothered living my healthy life loving that I have curves and I have no health complications. Again I do not glorify obesity. I glorify that I can wake up and be completely happy that I'm alive and I'm content with who I am as a human being. I have been in shape and the way I feel about myself was no different then what I feel about myself today. Thanks for all the love to everyone who actually understood what I was saying. Love to all the negative commenters also. You guys made me laugh with all the ridiculous thot and slut comments."

In a backlash to derogative comments from trolls who called her a "slut", she had her final say with this Instagram post.
