Lena Dunham celebrates new body outlook by sharing naked selfie

Ever since she created and starred in Girls, Lena Dunham has been known for her realistic and positive attitude to nudity.

So it was perhaps no surprise to see the 31-year-old had posted a nude picture on her Instagram account on Thursday.

However, the actor had an important message about her figure that she wanted to share with her followers, explaining that she had long used her body as “fodder for jokes” but that her recent, well documented, battle with endometriosis had somewhat changed that view.

In the personal post, she told her followers: “Just wanted to share that one of the reasons @eatingboys has inspired me so much is because of the way she mixes her humor and sexuality. I spent so many years loving my body but thinking it wasn't lovable by others- its sole purpose was to be fodder for jokes.

“I performed the insult so no one else could.

“I don't regret any of it- that's my art and that was my truth- but now, at age 31, having been through hell and back with my health and other people's perceptions of my physicality, I feel deeply comfortable with the idea that this pear-shaped pot of honey is equally good for making people laugh and laying out like a Suicide Girl circa 2004.

“Love it all.”

Dunham has spoken candidly about her health related weight-loss, hitting back at media outlets that have praised her new look.

In March she published a similarly lengthy Instagram post about her body and health, saying: “Right now I'm struggling to control my endometriosis through a healthy diet and exercise.

“So my weight loss isn't a triumph and it also isn't some sign I've finally given in to the voices of trolls.

“Because my body belongs to ME – at every phase, in every iteration, and whatever I'm doing with it. I'm not handing in my feminist card to anyone.”

The staunch feminist also saw red last month over a disingenuous magazine cover that shared her “diet tips”.

She hit back by posting a list of sarcastic diet tips to social media, including “anxiety disorder” and complaints about the US political situation before round it off with: “I have no tips I give no tips I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx.”

Preach, Lena.
