Lana Del Rey takes on Nirvana

Lana Del Rey risked the wrath of Nirvana fans last night (26 July) by performing a cover of one of the grunge band's greatest hits, Heart-Shaped Box.

Never one to shy from a challenge, Del Rey gave a slightly strained rendition of Nirvana's 1993 track, written by Kurt Cobain, at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, Australia.

A brief clip of the performance on YouTube (below), shows the crowd cheering in appreciation, but reaction to the cover elsewhere was a little more mixed.

The Sydney Morning Herald praised Del Rey's "awkward vulnerability," which it said chimed well with "Kurt Cobain's seething rage."

Others were not so complimentary.

"I'm a long time Nirvana fan also and no one should attempt to do it as it can't be done better by anyone else! It's very amusing to watch such materialist people do Nirvana covers but that's about it," one user wrote, as another added, "She's a good singer don't get me wrong, but I guess I'm just really picky when it comes to Nirvana songs."
