What is it with celebrity wedding crashers? If it’s not Tom Hanks appearing in a couple’s wedding photo shoot in Central Park, it’s Taylor Swift turning up at a fan’s nuptials in New Jersey.
Now, Kristen Stewart and girlfriend Stella Maxwell have joined the ranks of surprise celebrity wedding guests – an elite group that also includes Serena Williams, Snoop Dogg and Beyoncé.
The couple pitched up at the wedding reception of Kirsten and Kayleigh Jennings over the weekend, much to the brides’ delight (and slight bemusement).
CBC News reports that the Jennings had tied the knot earlier that day in a family member’s back garden, before moving onto a reception at Pizzeria Gusto, an Italian restaurant in Winnipeg, Canada.
At around 10pm, the restaurant’s owner asked the newlyweds if they would mind adding two more people to their 90-strong wedding party.
“[He] came up to me, and he said, ‘Hey, is it OK if Kristen Stewart and her girlfriend Stella [Maxwell] come and have a few drinks with you guys?’” recalls Kirsten Jennings.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, totally! Yeah, no problem. Um, who is that?’”
Kayleigh Jennings, who is originally from Oklahoma, says that she told her new wife: “Hey, let’s just treat them as random guests. Let's just treat them with kindness – southern hospitality. Winnipeg hospitality.”
The small Canadian city is perhaps not where you’d expect to find a Hollywood A-lister and her Victoria’s Secret model girlfriend. According to Us, Stewart was in Winnipeg shooting JT LeRoy, an upcoming film based on the true story of a mysterious literary hoax. The owner of Pizzeria Gusto had met Stewart at an earlier date, when he helped out at an event for the actress.
The Jennings say that while it was a surprise to have strangers at their wedding, they weren’t put off by Stewart and Maxwell’s presence.
“They looked just like two normal girls,” says Kirsten. “They look a little Hollywood, but if we didn't know who they were, I don’t know if I would have known.
“We said ‘Hey, you know. Come on and meet your guests and, you know, don’t segregate yourselves. Come and party.”
It looks like they did just that. Wedding DJ Karli Elizabeth Colpitts posted photos and videos of Stewart and Maxwell on Instagram, revealing that the actress even requested that she play a Beastie Boys track.
“Dj'ed the MOST fun wedding for these incredible wom[e]n last night and had an unplanned guest show up to dance with us at the end of the night!” wrote Colpitts in the capiton. “Apparently Kristen Stewart loves Beastie boys!”
Kirsten and Kayleigh have been together since 2010. They met while bartending in the Cayman Islands, and decided to relocate to Kirsten’s hometown of Winnipeg because of Canada’s laws on same-sex marriage.
“We had a really hard time getting into the States because same-sex marriage wasn't approved federally until 2013, and this was in 2012,” explains Kirsten. “Our lawyer told us to come up to Canada and get degrees.”
The couple now plan to move to Austin, Texas. And while they weren’t fazed by Stewart and Maxwell’s presence, there was one wedding guest who was star-struck.
“My Aunt Linda was extremely excited,” laughs Kirsten.
