Christina Aguilera bonded with Kelly Clarkson over the powerful legacy of her debut album
6 years ago
During an appearance on Kelly Clarkson’s new daytime talk show, Christina Aguilera reflected on the powerful legacy of her self-titled debut album, and why her songs remain as important today as they did 20 years ago.
It’s safe to say that Kelly Clarkson has been slaying it with her new chat show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, since its much-anticipated debut last week. After her premiere on NBC, the singer-turned-daytime-TV-host drew in a phenomenal “1.9 household metered market rating,” according to Variety, which represents the highest daytime debut for a new syndicated show in seven years.
The American Idol coach clearly has every intention of keeping her sky-high ratings, especially since she kicked off her second week by welcoming another powerhouse vocalist into the fold: Christina Aguilera.
In a hilarious one-to-one chat, Clarkson and Aguilera bonded over the perils of taking their children on tour, their love of 90s music, and the art of mastering a selfie. As a massive Christina Aguilera fan, Clarkson couldn’t disguise her love for the vocal legend, as the pair chatted about Aguilera’s self-titled debut album.
“One of the reason I love and have covered a lot your songs,” Clarkson began, “honestly is because for females, you have such an amazing catalogue, your empowerment level of females especially is so cool.”
Aguilera, who is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her No. 1 album Christina Aguilera, which spwaned hits such as Genie in a Bottle and What a Girl Wants, then explained that she had always aspired to empower people with her music.
“Authenticity is very important to me with my music,” she agreed. “I always wanted to a be a truth-seeker, and I found that that was really important to my fans too, after Stripped, I really told my truth, and the sides to all women that we are.
“We shouldn’t be apologetic for our sexual side, for our vulnerable side, through being a fighter and overcoming obstacles, I think those were all messages that were really important to me and still are,” she continued, as the audience clapped enthusiastically.
The pair went on to discuss the difficulties of working in a male-dominated industry, especially given that the media perpetuates the idea that female artists are forever in competition with each other.
“One of the most discouraging things about this business is that people definitely categorise and pit you against each other,” Aguilera explained.
“Why don’t they do that with males?” Clarkson interjected.
“It’s so stupid,” Aguilera agreed with a flick of her ponytail, before high-fiving Clarkson and exclaiming “We’re changing it!”
Given the immense love fans still have in their hearts for Aguilera’s award-winning debut album, Clarkson then asked Aguilera if there’s a particular song that she still loves performing on tour.
“Energetically, what’s super fun is when the beginning opening of Dirrty comes on,” Aguilera smiled. “And then the vulnerability and the connection that Beautiful has with people when I sing it,” she continued. “It’s such a relatable song, and such a truthful one too, just expressing your insecurities and being like, ‘well, that’s what I am,” and accepting yourself.”
The duo went on to discuss Aguilera’s Las Vegas residency, at which point the Candyman singer extended an invitation to Clarkson to join her on stage to sing a duet.
“I feel like girlfriends just gabbing right now, like no-one’s even here,” Aguilera laughed.
Here’s hoping these two legends make this performance official, because we’ll be the first ones in-line to watch.
