Kate Winslet has spoken out about how she was unable to enjoy her success following Titanic, because life became so ‘frantic.’

James Cameron’s 1997 film about the devastating story of the ocean liner in which Winslet acted alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, won 11 Oscars and has become an iconic and habitually referenced romantic tale.

Speaking at a Bafta event in London, the Oscar-winner said that her life changed ‘overnight’ after the film, telling the audience:

“It was a huge moment of course in my life. It was a big turning point moment. And my life did change really overnight.”

Although people had warned the actor that her life would change, Winslet recalls being in denial, until the moment it happened, saying:

“I remember one day being able to go and buy a newspaper and a pint of milk, no problem, and the next day I actually couldn't get out of the house because of paparazzi. And that was a huge shock.”

“Nothing really prepares you for that,” she says. “No one really can tell you about what to expect because it's so sort of unknowable. And so weird.”

Winslet describes the time as being “pretty overwhelming”, finding that she could no longer live in the manner she was used to, which meant that she didn’t enjoy the huge success of the film.

“I can honestly say I wasn’t able to even really enjoy the success of Titanic because it was so frantic.”

Winslet also revealed that, prior to filming, she hoped that Leonardo DiCaprio would be her co-star, saying:

“I just kept thinking, ‘Oh God I really hope he does it, I really hope Leo does it’.”

She describes filming as an “extraordinary experience” but one that was “Really very hard,” and that once filming had wrapped, she was “absolutely shattered.”

At the event, Winslet also expanded on her previous comments about the gender pay gap, and the media’s manner of broaching the subject, saying she thought it was all a bit ‘vulgar’.

She says that “Jennifer Lawrence is amazing for speaking up” about the issues she has faced, but that:

“There’s a separate thing that has started happening is that the lid has been somewhat lifted for journalists, and so journalists on red carpets will now say, ‘So how do you feel about the gender pay gap?’”

Winslet says journalists now ask her about her pay in relation to her male co-stars, saying:

“I’m not going to have that conversation with a friend or even a family member. Let alone in public.”

“Why would I stand on a red carpet and talk about how much I get paid?”
