For someone who's two years shy of 60, Jerry Hall looks pretty amazing - so you could forgive her for having a little help along the way. 

But the Texan supermodel is vehemently against any form of plastic surgery and has dismissed women who go under the knife as "insecure and pathetic creatures".

In surprisingly forceful and candid remarks this week, Jerry describes surgery as "idiotic", especially where it concerns "normal women".

"It's so idiotic when they risk their lives to have surgery," the-mum-of-four tells the latest edition of Hello! magazine. "Every time you have anesthesia, you're killing a lot of brain cells – why would you do that? You could get infections, you could die. 

"Why make yourself look a grotesque caricature of yourself? They don't fool anyone. They look like pathetic, insecure creatures. I loathe the whole thing." 

Plastic surgery has become a hot topic in Hollywood recently. Renée Zellweger attracted a stream of vicious gossip about what she had done, after many commented that her face looked different at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards in Beverly Hills in October (the Bridget Jones actress laughed off surgery rumours, saying "I'm glad folks think I look different!"). 

Jerry, 58, says she can understand why women in Hollywood feel pressure to maintain their looks - but she is not so forgiving of "normal women". 

"I don't mean to be critical, and I understand that actresses feel the pressure in Hollywood, they have to do it. I respect that and I feel sorry for them that they have to do it," she says. 

"But for normal women to do it? If men want to leave their wife for a 19-year-old, they're gonna do it anyway. All the facelifts and botox in the world isn't going to change that guy, you know?"

Jerry says she maintains her own looks with a regime of swimming and yoga, as well as avoiding bread and sugar in her diet.

"My face and body have been a tool for my career and I'm very conscious of that aspect, and try and keep it the best I can," she says. 

Jerry also talks about her relationship with her ex-husband, The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, with whom she has four children; Elizabeth, James, Georgia May and Gabriel. 

"I genuinely like him – he's funny, he's clever, he tries his best and he is also a great father," says the supermodel, who has been dating scientist Armand Leroi since January. "I think I chose really well – my children are smart, beautiful and talented, so I feel no regrets." 

"But he's not the sort of person I want to spend my old age with. Life changes, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Why shouldn't life change? Move on." 

Jerry and Mick parted ways in 1999 but are still close friends and spend Christmases together, along with some of his other ex-wives, partners and children (the 71-year-old has seven children in total, including Jade Jagger from his first marriage to Bianca Jagger and Lucas, his son with Brazilian model Luciana Gimenez. His long-term fashion designer partner L'Wren Scott committed suicide in March this year).

"My children are very close to Mick’s other children, my stepchildren," Jerry says, in a separate interview with the Guardian. "Mick has a son with another woman, after me, so the whole family is very, very close, and I’m close with the mothers. I think family is really, really important. It gives you a good foundation, a lot of strength. It’s really important to me that there is not conflict in the family. We have big Christmas get-togethers; with all the mums and all the children and it’s wonderful. One big blended family."
