The actress tried to buy a sandwich and made a humiliating (and humiliatingly relatable) slip-up.
Who among us has not succumbed to the allure of a train station sandwich? Sometimes, the only thing to do while waiting for a train and, subsequently, watching your life pass by, is to buy that sandwich and consume it in a moment of pure and unfettered hunger.
Jenna Coleman knows this. Being a human woman in this world, the actress is a fan of the train station sandwich, and she revealed as much in an interview with The Guardian this weekend. She admitted that her most embarrassing moment of all time involved a sandwich purchased at Leeds train station.
But it wasn’t the sandwich itself that was the problem. It was the humiliating, and humiliatingly relatable conversation that came after she tried to purchase it.
“The man said to me: ‘Do you want to go for a drink?’ I said, ‘I am so sorry, I’ve got a boyfriend,’” Coleman recalled. “And he replied: ‘No, it’s a meal deal: if you take a sandwich, you can get a drink as well.’”
Ah, Coleman. We have all been that person who misread the social cues and thought someone was asking us out when, in fact, they were trying to help us secure a bargain.
Props to Coleman for being able to retell this story in a national newspaper (and international website) and, indeed, continue to exist in society at all. If it was me, I would have immediately withdrawn from public life, changed my name and moved to a remote corner of New Zealand.
And Jenna? If it helps at all, my most embarrassing moment of all time tops yours. Once, I went up to my friend in the cheese aisle of the supermarket and pulled him into a hug from behind, asking him what we should get for our antipasto platter, only to have the man turn around to face me at which point I realised that he was a complete stranger and my friend was actually a few steps away surveying the dips.
Not only have I never returned to that supermarket but I give it a berth so wide you could drive a truck through it anytime I’m in the neighbourhood.
Aside from the meal deal mishap, the rest of Coleman’s interview is a delight, and a reminder that the Doctor Who and Victoria actress – and soon to be guest star on the new season of Inside Number 9 – is a national treasure.
Her guilty pleasure is spending four hours in the bath, she once told her mother that she wanted to grow up to be a swan and the most expensive thing she owns is a very cool, very casual Matisse.
Coleman, if all you have to reckon with when it comes to humiliation is mistaking a meal deal offer for, well, a romantic meal deal offer, then we think you’re doing OK.
